FRI-8 beta-lactamase should be renamed as FLC-2 ?

Hello,

The FRI-8 beta-lactamase (described in this paper) has 99.6 % sequence identity with FLC-1, whereas it has only 81 % sequence identity with FRI-1. Additionally, the N-terminal sequence is identical with the one from FLC-1, and different and one residue longer compared with all other members of the FRI family.

In these conditions, I would suggest to rename FRI-8 as FLC-2.

At NCBI, we elected not to treat FLC-1 and FRI-8 (the proposed FLC-2) as separate from the rest of the FRI family.

A third branch of the FRI family, including FRI-5 and FRI-12, has a third somewhat different signal peptide region. Past the signal peptide region, conservation among all three branches is very strong. It does not seem justified to try to maintain FLC alleles as a separate family from FRI alleles.
