how to trigger \\sum?

I saw in the default snippet that besides the snippet for sum that replaces it with \\sum there is another snippet that should replace \sum with \\sum_{${0:i}=${1:1}}^{${2:N}} $3. However that doesn't seem to work but I don't understand why. I have looked in the docu but couldn't find the reason!

The trigger must be \\sum. We need two backslashes here, the first one to escape the second one.

In math mode, type sum and then press tab.
