The IDE freezes when switching between the code and preview in *.adoc files

Observed vs. expected behavior

The IDE freezes for a couple of seconds when switching between the code and preview in *.adoc files. The IDE shows the following message in logs at this time:

Steps to reproduce

1. Open any *.adoc document.
2. Try to switch from code to preview.

=> The IDE freezes for a couple of seconds. See the attached screencast.

Note

The same issue occurs regularly when opening *.adoc files with the preview disabled. Didn't see such issues on Intel Mac and Windows.

Thank you for providing the thread dump. Unfortunately I don't have an environment to reproduce it. Looking at the code and Swing code it calls, I suspect that changing the background warning message from non-HTML to HTML is causing some recreation of elements.

I'll prepare a version where I initialize the label differently, maybe it will help. I'll comment here once a pre-release is available.

This is now included in pre-release 0.44.4. Please give it a try if it fixes the problem. By initializing the JLabel with HTML directly, I assume I either fixed it, or causes the delay on every opening of an AsciiDoc file.

Please comment here with your findings, @andreyaksenov. Maybe @bbq2100 who upvoted the issue, or @ascheman who is using a mac can help here (not sure if it is a Mx though).

@andreyaksenov - the log message you mentioned above states:

threadDumps-freeze-20250305-112408-IU-243.25659.39-Inet6AddressImpl.lookupAllHostAddr-5sec

That points to a situation where some address lookup might be involved. As this log message points to a folder, maybe this folder contains additional information that you can share either here or in a direct email? You find my email address in my GitHub profile. Thanks!

Hi @ahus1, thanks for your work on this. Unfortunately, the issue is still reproduced. Attaching a thread dump:

There is also the threadDumps-freeze-20250421-100620-IU-251.23774.435-Inet6AddressImpl.lookupAllHostAddr-5sec folder is created in the Log directory during the freeze, but this directory is empty. Here is the screen to make sure I'm using the EAP version:

P.S. BTW, forgot to mention that the issue is also reproduced when switching between tabs with adoc files opened (without involving the preview) or opening an adoc file in the editor (not every time but frequently):

I have an M2-MacBook and I do not see exactly this problem (see below). When first opening a document in Editor Only mode and then switching to Preview mode I see a short message on the canvas telling me that there might be a problem with GPU rendering. First opening the file this takes nearly 4 seconds (~5-9). On the second opening of the file it becomes much faster.

In the terminal window you can see the tail of the log, nothing special happens ...

@andreyaksenov - Thank you for the additional stack trace which revealed probably the real problem to me: I was resolving the local hostname to clear up some resources.

There is now version 0.44.5 available which does this outside of the EDT. Please give it a try. It should also be a lot more efficient when you use the plugin with the preview disabled.

@ahus1 The editor now works fast and smoothly - thank you for the fix! By the way, since the update, I no longer see the informational message about issues with GPU rendering when opening the preview.
