Flatpak CI Implementation Summary

Removed Flatpak and Snap from the release workflow and created an independent, non-blocking Flatpak CI workflow.

Changes Made

1. Release Workflow (release.yaml)

Removed:

  • Snapcraft installation step
  • SNAPCRAFT_STORE_CREDENTIALS environment variable
  • Flatpak installation step (was only on Ubuntu builds)
  • .flatpak file from Linux release assets
  • Obsolete @malept/flatpak-bundler debug flag
  • Extra blank line in env section

Result: Release workflow is now cleaner, faster, and no longer blocked by Flatpak or Snap builds.

2. Electron Builder Configuration

Removed:

  • flatpak target from linux.target array in electron-builder.json

Result: electron-builder no longer attempts to build Flatpak during releases.

3. New Flatpak CI Workflow (.github/workflows/flatpak-ci.yml)

Features:

  • ✅ Triggers: workflow_dispatch and push to main
  • ✅ Non-blocking: Independent job, failures don't affect releases
  • ✅ Container: ghcr.io/flathub-infra/flatpak-github-actions:freedesktop-24.08
  • ✅ Privileged mode: Required for Flatpak builds
  • ✅ Build from source: Uses checked-out repository
  • ✅ No secrets required: Build-only mode
  • ✅ Caching: SDKs, runtimes, and node_modules
  • ✅ Artifacts: Named with commit SHA and architecture
  • ✅ Fail-fast: Clear error messages
  • ✅ Build summary: Shows installation instructions

Workflow Steps:

  1. Checkout repository at triggering commit
  2. Set up build environment
  3. Restore caches (SDKs, runtimes, node_modules)
  4. Install Flatpak dependencies
  5. Validate manifest
  6. Build Flatpak from source
  7. Create bundle
  8. Upload artifact
  9. Generate build summary

4. Flatpak Manifest (electron/ai.nodetool.NodeTool.flatpak.yml)

Specifications:

  • App ID: ai.nodetool.NodeTool (stable)
  • Runtime: org.freedesktop.Platform 24.08
  • SDK: org.freedesktop.Sdk 24.08
  • Base: org.electronjs.Electron2.BaseApp 24.08
  • Architecture: x86_64 (initially)
  • Branch: stable

Permissions (Explicitly Declared):

  • Display: --share=ipc, --socket=x11, --socket=wayland
  • GPU: --device=dri (for AI workloads)
  • Audio: --socket=pulseaudio (multimedia processing)
  • Network: --share=network (API calls, model downloads)
  • Filesystem: --filesystem=home (user projects)
  • Devices: --device=all (microphone, camera)
  • System integration: Desktop notifications, status notifiers, portals

Each permission is documented with justification in the manifest.

Build Process:

  1. Build web frontend from source
  2. Build Electron application from source
  3. Download micromamba for Python environment
  4. Compile TypeScript
  5. Install to /app/nodetool
  6. Install desktop integration files
  7. Install icons for all sizes

The release workflow is now cleaner, faster, and more maintainable, while Flatpak users can still access builds through the dedicated CI workflow.
