Mental models are simplified representations of how things work - they're the frameworks and assumptions the human brain uses to understand the world and make decisions without getting into the details. Some groups that employ these frameworks build automated tools that scrape public GitHub issues for the word BOUNTY in titles, assuming the meaning of the word. Those lists are then processed by AI agents that post irrelevant comments. As a result, the amount of spam in GitHub issues that contain the word BOUNTY in their title has increased substantially.

In conversations, people often assume 'Bounty' refers to security bounties rather than redistribution of sponsors' funds to maintainers as support for their work on the project, requiring repeated clarifications from @thulieblack and @derberg.

These two issues indicate that it's required to change the name of the program to more precisely reflect the program's purpose and avoid giving false expectations to those whose understanding of the program may be based on a simplified mental model.

Therefore, the Bounty Program will be renamed the Microgrant Program, with 'Microgrant' becoming the primary name starting in round 2026-07. Until the transition, which is expected to finish in September 2026, is completed, some links, labels, and tags may use the words 'bounty' and 'microgrant' interchangeably.
