Raspberry pi 5 status

Hi everyone. I'm looking to get a project going with my raspberry pi 5 and SK6812 LEDs and I've seen that there are some issues, have these been resolved? I'm sorry if this has already been answered, I'm a complete noob to this so my head's been spinning from reading these forums!

Never had any problems with RPi 5 & SK6812 and HyperHDR, you must be confusing something with other similar project. Seeing problems with GPIO control from RPi pinout we have been recommending a different solution for years: #320. And for a long time you have available cheap rp2040 with built-in level shifter: just connect it and it will work while being in accordance with manufacturer sk6812 specification. You can find more in wiki or on the HyperSerialPico project.

I'm definitely connected to the start of the LED strip, is it likely that the LEDs are just faulty at this point? They were from AliExpress so it wouldn't be a complete suprise...

can be damaged, I dont know how you connected it and if is there a short-circuit somewhere or there is no connection somewhere. short-circuit may be hidden also in place where the connector is attached to the led strip. if you have a multimeter measure the voltage and the resistance of lines (with the led strip/power supply powered off).

You can also connect just one led directly to the Pico (using its ground, 5![data] and usb[+5v]) to test Adafruit board. It should be enough power for this one LED from USB instead of the LED power supply.

Damaged LEDs happen very rarely, sometimes it concerns critical damage of only the first LED (ex. due to a short circuit/bad connection made by the Chinese manufacturer at the input connection) and after cutting it off the rest should work. Most often, however, the entire strip fails: subsequent LEDs one after another at random location, but it's not that nothing works: there is simply a disco effect starting from the damaged LED to the end of the strip. Replacing damaged LED should help for some time.
