Suggested removal of Shelf

I would like to suggest the removal of Shelf from the list. Whilst it is technically FOSS (specifically AGPL), it relies on Supabase, Maptiler, and other non-selfhostable software, making it impractical to fully self-host. Given this, it seems that while Shelf meets the letter of the requirements to be included, it does unfortunately break the spirit of them.

Opening this as an issue first, as I'd like the list maintainers' opinions on such entries. Thanks

Hey there, thanks for raising this concern.

As far as I am able to tell you can self-host Supabase (which is also open-source) and Maptiler appears to be optional functionality rather than a core requirement. Users who prefer not to rely on external services can simply leave it unconfigured.

I do agree however, that the docs of Shelf are not great, as they do not explain how to self-host Superbase (or that Superbase can even be self-hosted)

Supabase's self-hosting information for Kubernetes are several years out of date, though after a second look I believe you're correct as the Docker instructions are significantly more up-to-date. Maptiler is listed as optional, though Shelf will not start without an API key for it set (though I've since found that setting it to a fictional key does appear to work).

After managing to get both Supabase and Shelf running, I was unable to use Shelf due to an authentication issue (which relies on Supabase) at which point I assumed that Shelf had not been tested on the self-hosted version of Supabase (which lacks several features), though found nothing to confirm this (which I should probably raise as a bug with Shelf).

Ultimately, if you feel that Shelf is still worth including, I won't argue further.

If you're running into these issues that suggest Shelf depends on Supabase Cloud, then I don't have any objection to removing it from the list.
