Private files

Does this module support private files as it is giving the error:

Message	Source image at private://attachments/1701144588-586.jpeg not found while trying to generate derivative image at private://styles/large/private/attachments/1701144588-586.jpeg.

If not, would it be possible to extend support for private file structure?

I had a little look in the Drupal queue, and it looks like no attempt was made in D7, but there have been attempts in D8+. Seems to be quite complex and contentious:

If it can be done, it would be helpful, particularly for sites that have a lot of private files.
