I have started to work on a port of the module, but I am unable to change the assignee to myself. Maybe this is because it will be my first.

The port effort is in my repo, https://github.com/izmeez/pagerer where I have created a branch: port-to-backdrop. I decided to create a branch so I can make commits along the way and may not need all those detailed steps once it's done.

I have made some progress on the port effort. The dependency on jquery_update has been removed since Backdrop doesn't need it and it is possible to see the different pagerer options. Next steps involve getting the presets to be saved and then the list of todo's: the example module, tests, D7 upgrade path.

I received a DM from @mondrake the original developer of the Drupal module that they are not interested:

I dropped any work on that module - its scope has definitely turned into frontend development that has much better tooling than it used to have when I started it over 10 years ago. This was a backend solution. Pagerer is in fact currently abandoned and looking for new maintainers.
