Issue Description:

This issue proposes transitioning the Backstage community meetings to Zoom.

Motivation:

The primary motivation for this transition is to foster a more open and inclusive Backstage community, enabling individuals from various regions to more actively participate in the project. By leveraging Zoom's capabilities, particularly its recording features, we aim to make meeting content easily accessible to those in different time zones or with scheduling conflicts.

Benefits of Using Zoom:

  • Enhanced Openness and Accessibility: Zoom offers robust recording capabilities, making it easy to record community meetings and upload them to platforms like YouTube. This will allow individuals who cannot attend meetings live to easily catch up on discussions and contribute asynchronously, leading to greater participation from our global community.
  • Standard CNCF Tooling: Utilizing Zoom aligns Backstage with the standard tools and infrastructure provided by the CNCF, potentially simplifying support and integration with other CNCF resources.

Requesting a Zoom Account:

Project maintainers can request a Zoom account from the CNCF through the servicedesk. Please note that the request for a Zoom account needs to be submitted by a project maintainer.

Next Steps:

  1. A Backstage project maintainer needs to submit a request for a Zoom account via the CNCF servicedesk.
  2. Once the Zoom account is provisioned, the community meeting schedules and invitations should be updated to utilize Zoom.
  3. Setup the YouTube integration to automatically stream the SIG meetings.
  4. Update any relevant documentation (e.g., community guidelines, meeting calendar) to reflect the change in meeting platform.
