The manual ( https://usa.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/5/333335/FS1RE1.PDF , page 8 ff. ) explains the specific formant mode of this synth. Instead regular FM/PM, it seems to provide parameters like center frequency, level, width, and skirt.
I do not understand the algorithmic implications, but maybe this could be "just" another mixing mode, and at the same time cover also the filter topic?
