Your (
@dhh) previous response to complaints about defaults that I came across was simply:But, shouldn't the defaults at least be free to use, right? Else, for example, you have no password manager to use by default for the foreseeable future; 1Password requires payment as far as I can tell (excluding the free 14-day trial), which goes against "no decisions at all on your first go with Omacom wares" in my opinion. My guess is that you disagree because of your writing on commercial GUIs.
Still, I'd argue that these commercial apps without a free tier needn't be installed by default, but rather be offered as an easy install (presumably Install > Service > ... -- I've not used Omarchy yet, still reading up). No default need be installed in the case of a password manager when capable and perpetually free alternatives exist (KeePassXC, Bitwarden free tier), so a selection of choices could be presented instead. Bitwarden does lack an authenticator, but for cheaper than 1Password's monthly price you can subscribe to gain access to theirs (or just use KeePassXC which is local only), but if 1Password really has that secret sauce which the others don't, list it first if you wish to drive Omarchy users to it.
Installation of default apps post installing Omarchy is a minor time investment, but so is uninstalling them. Although from my perspective uninstalling what feels undesired or like bloat takes away from the fresh OS installation experience. I don't mind well considered defaults, but commercial ones without a capable free tier just doesn't make good sense to me. A recommendation and a nudge towards such an option would be enough. Same goes for Typora (the others offer a usable free tier).
Regardless, I appreciate your efforts on this distro.
