看过金庸《碧血剑》的人，都对书中红衣大炮的威力印象深刻。红衣大炮的得名，并非因为大炮身裹红衣，而是以讹传讹的结果。它分明是来自长着一头红毛的夷人，所以一开始叫红夷大炮，后来不知何故变成了红衣大炮，并以这个名字流传开来。

<span>红衣大炮在明清围绕山海关的厮杀中发挥了举足轻重的作用，不过那时它主要以舶来品的身份出现在战场上。后来在征服全国以及平定三藩治乱的战斗中，清朝统治者高度重视红衣大炮的作用，并成功实现了大炮的本土化制造。在这一过程中发挥了重要作用的是在北京传教的欧洲耶稣会士，此前在人们心目中他们更多是作为天文学者、历法编撰者和地图制作者的形象存在。</span>

<span>其实就在明朝崩溃前夕，崇祯皇帝就已经命令耶稣会在中国的领袖汤若望，用他的技术和科学知识在北京建立一个火炮工厂。他要求汤若望在不减低火炮的火力或射程的情况下，缩减火炮的大小和重量。汤若望勉强接受了这个任务，并在第一年制造了 20 门大炮原型，并在第二年以这些为样本制造了 500 门大炮。在此期间，他还写了一本有关火炮的书，名为《火攻切要》。</span>

<span>征服中国全境以后，清朝的军队试图在火器的制造和配备上实现合理化和集中化。1673 年，康熙皇帝颁布了一条法令，命令每一个汉军八旗应该训练一个专门的火器营。这个命令与迫在眉睫的三藩之乱有着直接的关系。此次制造大炮的任务落在了汤若望的后继者南怀仁身上，康熙皇帝对南怀仁的指示是，要让大炮更轻和便于携带，更容易在崎岖的地形上运输，同时保持它的射程和发射重型炮弹的能力。因为一些叛军的据点设在山上，而清朝最好的军队仍然是满洲和蒙古的骑兵，他们在深山密林和中国南部的稻作区完全受到限制。南怀仁像他的前辈汤若望一样，勉强地接受了这项有悖于传教工作博爱精神的工作，并取得了很大成功。在康熙年间（1661-1722）制造的 900 门火炮中，有超过 500 门是在他的指导下或根据他的设计制造的。</span>

<span>南怀仁制造的第一门火炮被称为木炮，其中用一层油漆过的木头加固一个较轻的炮管，放置在一辆轮车上。实验成功以后，生产了几门这样的炮，并且在与三藩的战斗中使用。这种大炮最大的优点是便于运输，但是它在射程和口径上仍然相对微弱和局限。这些火炮的制造得显然相当匆忙，但是他们适应了形势的要求，可能也鼓励了皇帝继续投资制造新的、更好的枪炮。</span>

<span>康熙皇帝的计划是为八旗中的每一旗配备 40 门火炮。因此他命令南怀仁浇铸 320 门大炮。南怀仁在 1681 年，即三藩之乱被平定之后，制成了第一批一共 240 门新火炮。一批其他类型的火炮被继续浇铸，直到 1688 年南怀仁去世，这项工作才停止。</span>

<span>南怀仁制造的这些火炮有着卓越的高精准度，其中最重要的是“神威”、“武成永固”和“神功”。“神威”是一种装置在二轮小车上的轻型野战炮；它的有效射程是 200-300 米，发射 900 克重的炮弹。“武成永固”要坚固得多：它重约 2 吨-3.5 吨，炮弹的重量重达 10 公斤。这种炮同样是装置在轮车上的。“神功”火炮是装置在三轮车上的，它的大小介于“神威”和“武成永固”之间。重约 0.5 吨，发射炮弹重约 1.8 公斤。南怀仁还设计了一种放置于战壕中的迫击炮，名为“冲天炮”，它以锐利的曲线弹道发射爆破性的炮弹。除了设计、浇铸火炮，1682年，南怀仁还撰写了《神威图说》来阐述火炮使用的理论和方法。</span>

<span>火炮在长达八年的平定三藩的战争中发挥了关键作用，并在清朝反击俄罗斯对东北的蚕食、平定准噶尔叛乱以及 18 世纪西南地区进行的战争中扮演了重要的角色。但是清朝似乎并没有提高他们的火器潜在能力，也没有建立一种“军事工业”以快速、有效地回应外部局势的变化。</span>

<span>直到 18 世纪末，耶稣会士不顾教皇明确的禁令，仍然协助中国制造火炮，但已经无法在 17 世纪的火器技术上有所进步。在不久之后到来的鸦片战争中，清军所使用的仍然是耶稣会士浇铸的大炮类型，其威力在新一批漂洋过海来的“红夷大炮”面前大大地相形见绌了。</span>
