这家公司将砍掉所有跟这块业务相关的服务。不只是停止生产名为 Cube 的入门级 3D 打印机（售价 999 美元），他们还将在 2016 年1 月 31 日关闭面向消费者的平台 Cubify.com，早前消费者可以在这个网站上购买手机壳等零售产品，还可以下载相关素材。

砍掉消费者产品线后，3D Systems 公司仍会继续做专业市场。面向专业用户的 CubePro 打印机仍会继续生产和销售，这部分产品针对的是教育、工程师等专业领域的应用。

这距离 3D Systems 2012 年推出面向消费者的 Cube 系列产品才过去仅仅 3 年。在这背后，摆在这家 1986 年创建的上市公司面前的是一个很直接的问题：一方面消费者市场没有那么好做，另一方面公司亏损严重，只是今年第三季度的损失就有 3220 万美元，2014 年的净收入也相当惨淡，他们需要更快赚钱的方法。

虽然在大大小小的媒体上能见到不少 3D 打印机的曝光，但真正的消费者市场其实没有那么容易做。消费者市场没能把 3D 打印机捧热，背后原因很多，<a href="http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2015/12/29/3d-systems-discontinues-cube-printer-stock-plummet.aspx">例如价格还是相当昂贵、处理速度还不够快等诸多方面</a>，另外，已经有足够多的创业公司在做消费者级的产品。

市场调研公司 Gartner 的副总裁 Pete Basiliere 在 2014 年做了预测，他认为 3D 打印机大规模进入消费者市场需要 5－10 年时间，他<a href="http://www.gartner.com/newsroom/id/2825417">在 2014 年观察到</a>这个市场的局面：“大约 40 家生产商在售卖那些企业市场最常用的 3D 打印机，超过 200 家创业公司在研发和销售消费者级 3D 打印机，价格从几百美元起步。”

不过，对于砍掉消费者业务的 3D Syatems 来说，其实影响不会太大。根据官方估算，这项业务调整对营收的影响将会少于 2%，而公司的盈利能力将会提升。
