根据科技网站 <a href="http://www.petri.com/microsofts-2016-more-hardware-software-and-cloud" target="_blank">Petri 的消息</a>，微软内部正在开发一款体积更小的 Xbox 游戏机。相比现在的 Xbox One，这款设备的体积更小、价格也更便宜。但它只能运行从 Windows 应用商店下载的游戏，而非主机上常见的盒装游戏光盘。

Petri 同时表示，微软还没有确定是否会推进这个计划。如果最终进入到量产阶段，那么正式的上市时间会在明年下半年，并且会和 Xbox One 在市场上同时存在。而它的主要竞争对手，是苹果在今年 9 月发布的 Apple TV。

盒装的游戏光盘一直是主机玩家购买游戏的传统方式。由于依赖有实体载体的游戏光盘和线下销售渠道，主机的游戏价格一直没有办法像手机和 Steam 一样降到最低。如果推出没有光驱的 Xbox One，微软将挑战这一商业模式。

早在 Xbox One 发布之初，微软就曾希望为数字下载游戏做一些铺垫，比如买一份游戏分享给朋友一起玩，而不是每人都得买一张光盘。但它的一些具体限制遭到大量抗议，最终微软彻底放弃。

此外现在可能并不是微软挑战旧模式的最佳时机，因为这一代游戏主机之争，微软被索尼超过。PS4 目前已经卖出了 <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/playstation-4-just-made-history-2015-11?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+typepad%2Falleyinsider%2Fsilicon_alley_insider+%28Silicon+Alley+Insider%29" target="_blank">3020 万台</a>，<span>超过了 PS2 同期的成绩</span>。而 Xbox One 才只有大约 <a href="http://www.ibtimes.com/ps4-vs-xbox-one-sony-has-sold-302-million-playstation-4-consoles-nearly-double-2199807" target="_blank">1500 万的销量</a>。
