site a bit drab/plain?

The new site is mostly text and mostly black and white. That was somewhat true of statistics.b.e/computing, but there we had more features on the pages and more color. I don't think we should delay launch, but some things to consider:

• are there other themes we could consider?
• more color such as for hyperlinks (anything else?)
• adding some callout boxes?
• add some screenshots?

We could add a "landing page" style banner, e.g. https://jupyter-book.github.io/example-landing-pages/, although I don't know which images to use.

Callouts and screenshots might be nice.

I added some color to the top. I chose something in the branding guidelines that works well with black and white text, but it probably needs to be light/dark mode sensitive. It also interacts with the logo in a weird way with dark mode.

I like the additional color in the nav bar highlighting (not sure if this is new) and the footer.
I don't like the bare light blue bar in the header area. It just sort of sticks out.

Do you mean the on-hover gray background in the left side navigation? That's part of the standard book theme.

In the header, I also tried replacing the logo with the title or using logo and title (like quarto sites have), but then the title was getting duplicated at the top of the left side navigation and it seemed redundant.

Is there a quarto theme or color scheme you like?

I've added color to the links, and tweaked dark mode a bit. I had to exclude the side nav from having the same blue/underline styling, but the pager links at the bottom also have the blue text and underlines. I can probably exclude those from the new formatting too.

I made the top-left logo bigger by using the horizontal "lockout" and removing some padding.
