Is this a feature relevant to companion itself, and not a module?

  • I believe this to be a feature for companion, not a module

Is there an existing issue for this?

  • I have searched the existing issues

Describe the feature

I have 2 laptops that both have Companion installed on them. I switch between the 2 laptops by simply unplugging the dock from one of them and into the other. They both use the ethernet from the dock, which means that when I swap between them, they maintain the same local IP address, so I can use one tablet and keep it at the same address to load the companion emulator.

The only problem is that the emulators don't have the same ID, so I can't use the same emulator URL and just refresh it. For this reason, and just because it would be nice to have human readable IDs, I'd like the ability to edit the ID of emulators. If you don't want to be able to edit IDs that already exist, then at least be able to specify IDs on creation.

Usecases

  1. If you have multiple emulators, being able to use a human-readable name as an identifier would be useful (granted, we do have Name's that can be used while selecting them from the emulator list)
  2. Being able to match emulator IDs across multiple Companion instances
