Password prompt for some github accounts

When running the clone first fork later method I ran into an issue where a password was required, investigation required, possible fix?

It's possible the repo is private even though the tarball is public. I know ssh itself has cli flags to control how it prompts for passwords, etc., so I'd imagine git exposes them somehow.

Last time I ran this i did not have an issue... i also removed the recursive flag, i'm not sure if this was as a result of or something else...
