Environment autodetection

The main package currently determines the runtime environment (and hence the implementation of the Adapter to use) based on an explicit flag/env variable. We should investigate whether or not this is tenable to expect long-term, and if not implement logic which looks for queues in the environment to determine which adapter to instantiate.
