ADR 0004: CJK Line-Breaking (Kinsoku Shori)

Status: Accepted

Date: 2024-2025 (Design Phase)


Context

When rendering Japanese, Chinese, and Korean (CJK) text, line breaks cannot occur at arbitrary positions. Each language has strict rules about which characters can appear at line start/end.

The Problem

Naive line-breaking (works for English):

Result with Japanese:

はいい天気ですね。

Line breaks after 「今日」 and before 「は」, but 「は」 is a particle that cannot start a line in Japanese!

Correct breaking:

これはテストです。
今日はいい天気ですね。

Line breaks before 「今日」, so 「は」stays with previous word.

Why It Matters

  • Japanese users: Incorrect line-breaking looks unprofessional
  • Chinese users: Some characters prohibited at line start/end
  • Korean users: Similar rules for Hangul
  • Professional typography: Essential for publishing apps

Alternatives Considered

Option 1: No Special Handling (Simplest)

Implementation:

Pros:

  • Simple
  • Works for English

Cons:

  • Breaks CJK typography rules
  • Looks unprofessional to CJK readers
  • Can't be used in Japan/China/Korea markets

Verdict: Rejected - unacceptable for CJK content


Option 2: Use Flutter's Built-in Line-Breaking

Flutter has some CJK support in TextPainter:

Pros:

  • Built-in, no custom code
  • Handles basic CJK

Cons:

  • Can't use with custom RenderObject (we need manual line-breaking for floats!)
  • Not configurable
  • Doesn't follow strict Kinsoku rules

Verdict: Rejected - incompatible with float layout


Option 3: Implement Kinsoku Shori - CHOSEN

Kinsoku Shori (禁則処理) = "Prohibition processing" in Japanese

Implementation:

  • Maintain lists of prohibited characters
  • Check before/after line breaks
  • Adjust break position if needed

Pros:

  • Correct CJK typography
  • Professional quality
  • Configurable (can extend for other languages)
  • Works with custom line-breaking (float support)

Cons:

  • ~300 lines of code
  • Must maintain character lists
  • Slight performance overhead

Verdict: Accepted - essential for CJK support


Decision

We implemented Kinsoku Shori (CJK Line-Breaking Rules).

Latin words break at word boundaries, Japanese follows Kinsoku

What Was Hard

Character list compilation

  • Different sources have slightly different lists
  • Had to make judgment calls
  • Ended up with ~100 characters
