Step-by-Step Testing Guide: Assignment Completion Verification

How to Prove You've Completed the Design Assignment Successfully

Purpose: Verify that all deliverables are correct and complete before presenting to stakeholders.
Time: ~45 minutes
Tools: Browser, GitHub, text editor
Audience: You (assignment submitter), reviewers, stakeholders

Part 1: Document Completeness (10 minutes)

Step 1.1: Verify All Files Exist

Navigate to your repository root and confirm these files exist:

ls -la | grep -E "DESIGN_SPEC|COMPONENT_STATES|TESTING_CHECKLIST|IMPLEMENTATION_HANDOFF|ASSIGNMENT_SUMMARY"

Expected output:

-rw-r--r--  DESIGN_SPEC.md
-rw-r--r--  COMPONENT_STATES.md
-rw-r--r--  TESTING_CHECKLIST.md
-rw-r--r--  IMPLEMENTATION_HANDOFF.md
-rw-r--r--  ASSIGNMENT_SUMMARY.md
-rw-r--r--  src/design-tokens.css

✓ PASS if all files listed
✗ FAIL if any missing → Create immediately

Step 1.2: Verify File Sizes (Not Empty)

wc -l DESIGN_SPEC.md COMPONENT_STATES.md TESTING_CHECKLIST.md IMPLEMENTATION_HANDOFF.md ASSIGNMENT_SUMMARY.md src/design-tokens.css

Expected output (approximate):

 600 DESIGN_SPEC.md
 400 COMPONENT_STATES.md
 500 TESTING_CHECKLIST.md
 300 IMPLEMENTATION_HANDOFF.md
 350 ASSIGNMENT_SUMMARY.md
 300 src/design-tokens.css

✓ PASS if all files > 200 lines
✗ FAIL if any file is empty → Deliverable is incomplete

Step 1.3: Verify Key Sections Exist

Open each file and search for these critical sections:

DESIGN_SPEC.md:

  • § 1. Executive Summary
  • § 3. Design Intent & Visual System
  • § 4. Component State Specifications
  • § 5. Accessibility Requirements (WCAG 2.1 AA)
  • § 9. Interaction & Animation Specifications
  • § 12. Known Limitations & Deferrals
# Quick check:
grep -c "^## " DESIGN_SPEC.md  # Should output: ≥12
grep "WCAG" DESIGN_SPEC.md | head -1 # Should show WCAG reference

COMPONENT_STATES.md:

  • § Button Component
  • § Input Component
  • § Navigation Item Component
  • § Modal Component
  • § Empty State Component
  • § Status Badge Component
grep -c "^## " COMPONENT_STATES.md  # Should output: ≥7
grep "Code Example" COMPONENT_STATES.md | wc -l  # Should be ≥6

TESTING_CHECKLIST.md:

  • § 1. Test Environment Setup
  • § 3. Accessibility Compliance (WCAG 2.1 AA)
  • § 6. Testing Sign-Off Checklist
grep -c "^## " TESTING_CHECKLIST.md  # Should output: ≥6
grep -c "Pass Criteria" TESTING_CHECKLIST.md  # Should be ≥15

IMPLEMENTATION_HANDOFF.md:

  • § 2. File Structure & Setup
  • § 4. Component Refactoring Guide
  • § 7. Specific File Updates
  • § 11. Post-Launch: Monitoring
grep -c "^## " IMPLEMENTATION_HANDOFF.md  # Should output: ≥10
grep "checklist\|✓\|☐" IMPLEMENTATION_HANDOFF.md | wc -l  # Should be ≥20

src/design-tokens.css:

  • Light theme color tokens
  • Dark theme color tokens
  • Typography system
  • Spacing scale
  • Transitions & animations
grep -c ":root" src/design-tokens.css  # Should output: ≥2 (light + dark)
grep -c "var(--color-" src/design-tokens.css  # Should be ≥20
grep -c "var(--space-" src/design-tokens.css  # Should be ≥8

Score: Count passes

  • 11–13 ✓ → All sections present ✅
  • 8–10 ⭕ → Missing some sections, add before review
  • <8 ✗ → Major gaps, not ready

Step 1.4: Check No "TODO" or "TBD" Sections

grep -i "todo\|tbd\|fixme\|placeholder" DESIGN_SPEC.md COMPONENT_STATES.md TESTING_CHECKLIST.md

Expected: No output (no TODOs)

✓ PASS if no results
✗ FAIL if results exist → Complete those sections before submission

Part 2: Content Quality Check (15 minutes)

Step 2.1: Verify Design Tokens Are Defined

In src/design-tokens.css, check for:

Colors (copy/paste into browser console):

// Check light theme
const lightBg = getComputedStyle(document.documentElement).getPropertyValue('--color-bg-primary');
console.log('Light BG:', lightBg.trim()); // Should output: #ffffff

// Check dark theme
document.documentElement.setAttribute('data-theme', 'dark');
const darkBg = getComputedStyle(document.documentElement).getPropertyValue('--color-bg-primary');
console.log('Dark BG:', darkBg.trim()); // Should output: #0a0e17

document.documentElement.setAttribute('data-theme', 'light');

✓ PASS if both return color values (no "undefined")
✗ FAIL if undefined → Tokens not imported or missing

Spacing (in src/design-tokens.css):

grep "^  --space-" src/design-tokens.css | wc -l  # Should output: 8

Expected:

--space-xs: 4px;
--space-sm: 8px;
--space-md: 12px;
--space-lg: 16px;
--space-xl: 24px;
--space-2xl: 32px;
--space-3xl: 48px;
--space-4xl: 64px;

✓ PASS if all 8 exist
✗ FAIL if <8 → Add missing tokens

Typography (in src/design-tokens.css):

grep "^  --font-" src/design-tokens.css | wc -l  # Should output: ≥10

Expected (at least):

--font-heading-1
--font-heading-2
--font-body-md
--font-label-lg
--font-mono-sm

✓ PASS if ≥10 fonts defined
✗ FAIL if <10 → Add missing typography tokens

Step 2.2: Verify Component Specs Are Complete

Open COMPONENT_STATES.md and check each component has:

Button Component (search for "## Button Component"):

  • State table (Default, Hover, Focus, Active, Disabled, Loading)
  • Code example (React component)
  • CSS implementation
grep -A 20 "## Button Component" COMPONENT_STATES.md | head -5
# Should show state table immediately

Repeat for Input, Navigation Item, Modal, Empty State, Status Badge (6 components total).

✓ PASS if all 6 components have: state table + code + CSS
✗ FAIL if any component missing elements → Complete immediately

Step 2.3: Verify Accessibility Requirements

Open DESIGN_SPEC.md, search for "§ 5. Accessibility Requirements":

Check these are documented:

  • Color contrast requirements
  • Focus management & keyboard navigation
  • Live regions & announcements
  • ARIA attributes required
  • Semantic HTML examples
  • Typography accessibility (font size, line height)
  • Responsive design & mobile
  • Color blindness considerations

Checklist:

grep -i "wcag\|contrast\|focus\|keyboard\|aria\|semantic" DESIGN_SPEC.md | wc -l
# Should output: ≥30 (many mentions)

✓ PASS if all 8 topics covered
✗ FAIL if missing major topic → Add to spec

Step 2.4: Verify Testing Is Actionable

Open TESTING_CHECKLIST.md, verify each test has:

Format (per test):

Test Name
├─ Steps (numbered, not vague)
├─ Expected Result
└─ Pass Criteria

Example (correct format):

#### Test: Button Hover State

**Steps**:
1. Hover mouse over primary button
2. Observe visual changes:
   - [ ] Background darkens
   - [ ] Shadow increases

**Pass Criteria**: Hover state visually distinct from default

Count actionable tests:

grep "^#### Test:" TESTING_CHECKLIST.md | wc -l  # Should be ≥50

✓ PASS if ≥50 named tests with clear steps
✗ FAIL if <50 or vague instructions → Expand test suite

Part 3: Consistency Check (10 minutes)

Step 3.1: Cross-Reference Validation

Rule: Token names used in specs must exist in CSS.

Check:

# Extract all token references in specs
grep -o "var(--[a-z-]*)" DESIGN_SPEC.md COMPONENT_STATES.md | sort -u > /tmp/used_tokens.txt

# Extract all token definitions in CSS
grep -o "^  --[a-z-]*:" src/design-tokens.css | sed 's/:$//' | sort -u > /tmp/defined_tokens.txt

# Compare
comm -23 /tmp/used_tokens.txt /tmp/defined_tokens.txt
# Should output nothing (no missing tokens)

✓ PASS if no output (all tokens defined)
✗ FAIL if output exists → Missing token definition

Step 3.2: Component States Consistency

Rule: Every component state in COMPONENT_STATES.md must be referenced in DESIGN_SPEC.md.

Check:

# Extract component names from COMPONENT_STATES.md
grep "^## " COMPONENT_STATES.md | sed 's/## //' | sed 's/ .*//' > /tmp/component_states.txt

# Extract component sections from DESIGN_SPEC.md
grep "^#### " DESIGN_SPEC.md | sed 's/#### //' > /tmp/component_specs.txt

# Should have significant overlap
wc -l /tmp/component_*.txt

✓ PASS if both files ≥6 components
✗ FAIL if inconsistent → Align component lists

Step 3.3: Accessibility in TESTING_CHECKLIST Matches DESIGN_SPEC

Rule: Tests refer back to spec sections.

Check:

# DESIGN_SPEC should have accessibility section
grep "^ ### 5\." DESIGN_SPEC.md | head -1  # Should output "5. Accessibility..."

# TESTING_CHECKLIST should have corresponding tests
grep "^## Section 3:" TESTING_CHECKLIST.md  # Should output "Section 3: Accessibility"

✓ PASS if both files have accessibility sections aligned
✗ FAIL if misaligned → Update cross-references

Part 4: Presentation Checklist (10 minutes)

Step 4.1: File Formatting

Open each document and verify:

Markdown formatting:

  • Headings use #, ##, ### (not bold or inline)
  • Code blocks use ``` (not plain text)
  • Tables are formatted (not ASCII art)
  • Links use [text](url) format
  • Lists use - or 1., not inconsistent bullets
# Quick check for unformatted code:
grep -c "^    " DESIGN_SPEC.md  # Indented code (should use ```)

✓ PASS if <5 indented code blocks (most use ) **✗ FAIL** if many indented blocks → Reformat to ` `

Step 4.2: No Spelling/Grammar Issues

# Quick spell check (requires aspell)
aspell check DESIGN_SPEC.md < /dev/null > /tmp/spelling.txt 2>&1
wc -l /tmp/spelling.txt

✓ PASS if <5 reported issues
✗ FAIL if >5 → Proofread before submission

Step 4.3: File Sizes Are Reasonable

du -h DESIGN_SPEC.md COMPONENT_STATES.md TESTING_CHECKLIST.md IMPLEMENTATION_HANDOFF.md src/design-tokens.css

Expected (rough).

40K DESIGN_SPEC.md
25K COMPONENT_STATES.md
35K TESTING_CHECKLIST.md
20K IMPLEMENTATION_HANDOFF.md
12K src/design-tokens.css

✓ PASS if all files > 5KB (substantial content)
✗ FAIL if <5KB → Add more detail

Part 5: Ready-for-Review Checklist (Final)
