Jetsun Milarepa (11th–12th century) was a famed Tibetan siddha and spiritual poet, whose life is remembered as a powerful story of transformation. In his youth, he committed acts of murder through sorcery, but later came to deeply regret his actions. Seeking redemption, he turned to Buddhism and became a devoted student of Marpa the Translator, who was himself a disciple of the Indian master Naropa. Through intense ascetic practice and profound realization, Milarepa rose to become one of Tibet’s most celebrated yogis and mystical poets. His teachings and songs of spiritual insight left a lasting legacy, and he became the teacher of several legendary disciples, most notably Gampopa, who played a key role in the formation of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism.

> ‘The wheel and axle’ revolutionized human technological history by transforming linear to rotary motion and causing parts of devices to move.
25+
> While its ancient origins are commonly associated with the appearance of carts during the Bronze Age, we focus on much earlier wheel-shaped find: an exceptional assemblage of over a hundred perforated pebbles from the 12,000-year-old Natufian village of Nahal Ein-Gev II, Israel.
26+
> We analyze the assemblage using 3D methodologies, incorporating novel study applications to both the pebbles and their perforations and explore the functional implications.
27+
> We conclude that these items could have served as spindle whorls to spin fibres.
28+
> In a cumulative evolutionary trend, they manifest early phases of the development of rotational technologies by laying the mechanical principle of the wheel and axle.
