Description
Hi all: I am starting this thread as a way to gather the explicit prerequisites of shell skills in order to successfully participate in the hpc-intro lesson. The shell prerequisites are (most explicitly) stated here right now:
https://carpentries-incubator.github.io/hpc-intro/learner-prerequisites/index.html
which basically boils down to:
- Moving Around (navigating filesystem)
- Extended file operation (e.g. batch renames)
- Understanding command-line flags
- Basic shell scripting
The "pre-workshop survey" has a number of questions that are diagnostics of learner's shell abilities.
#428 contains a request to add contents on shell environment variable, which are often used in scientific applications.
Anything else that I may miss, please add. It will be good to put these things explicitly somewhere in the lesson so instructors are clear of what skills are essentially required.
