| 5 | +title: Sounds like you're working for your phone. Simplify, man! |

| 8 | +
|
| 9 | + I'm no expert on managing distractions with my phone. |
| 10 | + But I am a person who struggles to spend his time in a meaningful way. |
| 11 | + This is a list of some of the solutions I've found over my 16 years as a smartphone owner. |
| 12 | +
|
| 13 | +
Turn off all notification sounds
|
| 14 | +
|
| 15 | + Notifications aren't important. |
| 16 | + If it was imporant, then it would be a phone call. |
| 17 | + So, I turn off all notifications sounds or vibration. |
| 18 | + Without them, I have fewer reminders to check my phone. |
| 19 | +
|
| 20 | +
Turn off notifications for almost everything
|
| 21 | +
|
| 22 | + As I said, notifications aren't important. |
| 23 | + You usually don't even need them. |
| 24 | + Do I need to know whenever I get a like on Instagram? No. |
| 25 | + I'll find that out when it's time to use Instagram. |
| 26 | + I allow notifications for text messages and photo memories; almost everything else is disabled. |
| 27 | +
|
| 28 | +
Don't suggest apps that you waste time on
|
| 29 | +
|
| 30 | + I made an entire post about this in the past. |
| 31 | + I realized that whenever I thought to do something in my web browser, I'd get suggestions for websites I waste time on. |
| 32 | + Instead of going to the website I wanted to, I'd click on one of the suggestions and—surprise—start wasting time. |
| 33 | + I don't need any help remembering the address for Reddit or the local sports news site. |
| 34 | + So, I disable suggestions like this. |
| 35 | +
|
| 36 | +
Block apps when you need to focus
|
| 37 | +
|
| 38 | + When I'm working, I spend all day at my computer. |
| 39 | + This makes it very easy to get distracted. |
| 40 | + And yes, some distractions are fine when you're stuck doing something for 8 hours a day. |
| 41 | + But, I want to completely prohibit some distractions during work time. |
| 42 | + In Firefox I use LeechBlock NG. |
| 43 | + In Android I use Focus mode. |
| 44 | + Both of these options let you choose specific websites or apps and set times when you don't want to use them. |
| 45 | +
|
| 46 | +
Set time limits
|
| 47 | +
|
| 48 | + If you're spending too much time on Tik Tok, set a time limit so you spend less time on Tik Tok. |
| 49 | + I set an App timer for Instagram. |
| 50 | + Currently I have it set to 0 minutes (which I lowered from 5 minutes). |
| 51 | + I can still check Instagram when I'm using my desktop computer. |
| 52 | +
|
| 53 | +
Uninstall apps
|
| 54 | +
|
| 55 | + When an app timer isn't enough, uninstall the app. |
| 56 | + A few apps I've uninstalled: Reddit, Instragram, and Twitch. |
| 57 | + You can still use these apps on your laptop or desktop computer. |
| 58 | + You probably don't need access to time-wasting apps 24 hours a day. |
| 59 | +
|
