Chimera's History

Founding & Early Days

Chimera was founded in early 2012 by Dana Woodman and a small group of people who had a vision for Sonoma County and what it could become. We founded Chimera both as a space to create and a hub for the creative community in this area.

For the first few months of our history, we grew our community from a few friends to a group of over 800 people. We quickly realized that Sonoma County and the North Bay was craving a space like Chimera, so we set making the dream a reality.

Ford Garage

After searching for a space, the Chimera founders settled on the old Ford Garage building in downtown Sebastopol.

Our initial momentum slowed when the realities of the space we had chosen became clear. The City of Sebastopol required us to install fire sprinklers and emergency access doors into our main, 5,000 sq.ft. space before opening.

Luckily our landlord was a believer in our mission and decided to undertake the renovations himself.

Today

We opened for membership in December 2013 after getting our business license and insurance.

We’re operating in our smaller, 700 sq.ft. mini-makerspace in the back lot of the Ford Garage until the main space is ready for us to move in.

Tomorrow

Our story is continually evolving and if we remember, we’ll keep this page updated as we go!

After years of putting on art events, in 2008 Spring co-founded The Great Handcar Regatta festival which at its peak drew an attendance of up to 18,000 participants. In addition, her innovative organizational skills have been utilized at events such as Iron Horse Winery’s Earth Day Celebration, The Harmony Festival and Maker Faire. Spring’s support for the arts also overflows into community involvement and public art projects, where she serves on a number of grassroots, city government and private art foundation committees.

Spring holds a BA in Art History and Art Practice from Sonoma State University and an MA in Museum Studies from San Francisco State University. When not busy constructing clothing, curating art shows, improving her neighborhood with public art advocacy or riding one of her homemade bicycle contraptions, Spring can be found in the garden at her mini urban homestead with her husband and daughters in Sonoma County, CA.

Interested in teaching at Chimera? We’re always looking for talented educators to teach classes at Chimera.

Here are some things to know about being a teacher Chimera:

You don’t need to have a degree in your area of knowledge (but that’s a plus!).

We take a percentage of class proceeds for paid classes. Usually it is 50% to you and 50% to the Chimera.

You don’t need to be a member to teach a class at Chimera, although members earn more when teaching.

Members get a discount on classes.

Classes are open to the public.

We appreciate references so we can vet you as a teacher.

Classes must be 6 students or less.

If you’re interested in teaching a class, the first step is to post your idea in our Google Group to see if members would be interested.

Let Us Know

After you’ve read and completed the above, contact us with the following information:

Proposed date(s)/time(s) for your class (give us alternates in case a date isn’t available)

Class fee per student (if any)

Materials fee (if any)

Prerequisites for students (if any)

Class description (2-3 paragraphs about the class, what will be taught and who the class is relevant to)

Teacher bio (why should people trust you as a teacher?)

Age restrictions for students (e.g. if it’s an adults only class, let us know!)

Any photos of what students will learn (helps to sell your class)

Fabrication Shop Project

Chimera is attempting to raise money to get an industrial fabrication shop. This page outlines the plan, our current progress and how you can help.

Current Progress

Goal: $12,000
Raised: $2,170

18% Complete

As of March 5th, we have collected $2,170 out of our goal of $12,000.

The Plan

The general game plan is this:

We are looking for a space that meets our needs for a fabrication facility (see Space Requirements below)

We are attempting to raise at least $12,000 to pay for the space and a few months of operating costs.

If we don’t meet that goal in a reasonable time frame, we will refund people’s money.

The space is intended as a fabrication shop and may include the following activities and tools:

Welding

CNC milling

Plasma cutting

Lathe

Break

Pipe bender

Table saw

Drill press

General power tools

Hand tools

Work benches

Project storage

And more…

If we find a space and raise the money, we will cash the checks and start the process of renting, which will require the following expenses:

Use permit (if needed)

First/last month rent

Setup costs (repairs, walls, etc)

Other fees

Without your help, this won’t happen: Get Involved!

Space Requirements

Below is a list of the requirements we have for a space:

At or less than $2,000/month lease

2,000 sq.ft. or larger

220 volt/220 amp/3-phase of power or greater

Roll up door(s)

Outside space (covered a plus)

High ceilings (15ft+)

Kitchette, bathroom

Ventilation of some kind.

In Santa Rosa or Sebastopol (and possibly Cotati)

M-2 or M-3 / IG General Industrial or better zoning

You can find the zoning for a particular address on this website.

See something we’re missing? Let us know.

Getting Involved

Pre-Pay for Membership

The most important way you can get involved is to pre-pay for membership. We’re asking for $300 from each interested individual, but you can of course donate more to the cause if you really want to see this project happen. By pre-paying for membership, your money will go towards your first 3 months of membership and setup costs.

To pre-pay for membership, please email us at [email protected] with the subject “Fabrication Shop Membership”.

If we do not reach our goal in a sufficient timeline, we will refund your money. You can also request us to refund your money any time before we settle on a space (we will let you know before we cash checks!). But remember, this is a big undertaking and will take time; please be patient.

Donate

If you don’t have the money to pre-pay for membership, but want to help us, please consider donating.

Find a Space

We also need help finding the right location. Check out our list of requirements above and help us search for spaces.

Trained for and practiced internal medicine for five years, before discovering what was to become a lifelong obsession with connecting things that move to a computer. My first experiments with stepper motors in 1990 resulted in Eggbot– a spherical plotter for decorating my kids’ Easter eggs. Twenty years later I teamed up with Evil Mad Science Laboratories, which led to its release as an open-source project and popular seller on their site.

My continued fascination with motion control branched into art and educational uses– as artist-in-residence at the Science Museum of Minnesota, 2001-4, I taught classes (kids building and programming their Eggbots) and worked on NSF-funded grants creating exhibits. During the same period, I began ongoing series of large scale motion control sculptures that have been permanently installed in science centers in the US, Canada, Europe, and Australia. More info on both the educational and art sides of my work can be found on my site.

Most recently, I have discovered (and fallen deeply in love) with makerspaces, starting as a member of The Mill in Minneapolis and then as one of the founders of Nordeast Makers in St. Paul. Now that my wife and I have moved out to Sebastopol, I am delighted to find Chimera and its wonderful community– my hope is to continue both making, teaching and learning here!
