Improving Database Performance

I use mariadb as the backend database on Rocky Linux 9 for my XCADB 2.9, as my entries grow it gets more sluggish.

- Is there a way to improve database performance?  
- Can I turn on indexing to speed up queries?  If so what should I index on.
- Is using an odbc connector better than using native connector?
