It seems that this problem occurred for the first time in CMSSW_15_1_ROOT6_X_2025-04-01-2300. The cms-sw/cmsdist#9768, that updated the ROOT master, was included there. The difference of ROOT is
cms-sw/root@cms/master/2182efbb59...cms/master/3f866f57cd

I didn't see anything obvious in CMSSW PRs that would look related. On cmsdist side, also cms-sw/cmsdist#9765 was included, that caused some ROOT-related trouble in #47740, but doesn't really seem related to this problem.

We have another recent ROOT-related issue #47697 where the Error parsing payload code for class exception is one symptom, but I have no idea if that could be related.

I think we need @pcanal here too (given that this occurs only with ROOT master, the priority is lower than the problems we're seeing in our production setup)
