Feature request: Double-clicking on a file to open edit window

Currently double-clicking on a file does nothing, which is really weird IMO, and is a wasted user interaction opportunity.

Editing feels a bit too aggressive, and not even applicable to most files. Most file managers "open" the file, so a moral equivalent may be to download it?

Or maybe we can combine the ideas. On the old Navigator, double-clicking a text file opens the edit window right away, and for non-text files, a dialog shows up:

<file name> is not a text file. Open it anyway?
WARNING: this may lead to file corruption.

No / Yes

Selecting "Yes" brings up the edit window with garbled binary characters inside. That's not helpful, so maybe we can prompt to download the file instead.
