1. WHAT IS BEING BUILT

1.1 Conceptual Overview

Phase 2 delivers the WalletConnect v2 Adapter — a full implementation of the WalletAdapter interface from Phase 1 that connects Moistello to any wallet supporting the WC2 protocol. This is the single highest-leverage integration in the entire wallet phase roadmap. A single adapter unlocks 200+ wallets, including the three most popular wallets in Stellar's key markets: Lobstr (500K+ users, dominant in Africa/LATAM), Coinbase Wallet (100M+ users), and Trust Wallet (80M+ users).

Without Phase 2, Moistello is locked to desktop browser extensions. With Phase 2, a user in Lagos opens Moistello on their Android phone, taps "Connect with WalletConnect," scans a QR code with Lobstr, and is authenticated in under 5 seconds. This phase transforms Moistello from a desktop-only dApp into a mobile-first dApp — the direction Stellar's user base is already moving.

The WalletConnect adapter implements every method of the WalletAdapter interface from Phase 1 (connect, disconnect, isConnected, signMessage, signTransaction, getPublicKey, getNetwork), wrapping WC2's Sign API protocol. It handles:

  • Pairing via QR code — desktop browser renders a QR, user scans with mobile wallet
  • Pairing via deep link — mobile browser opens a wc: URI, wallet app handles it
  • Session persistence — WC2 sessions survive page refresh and browser restart (WC2 stores pairing in its own persistent storage)
  • SEP-0007 method mapping — WC2 Stellar namespace methods (stellar_signXDR, stellar_signAndSubmitXDR, stellar_getPublicKey) map to our adapter interface
  • Network detection — adapter reads the Stellar network from the WC2 session namespace config
  • Graceful degradation — when WC2 relay is unreachable, adapter returns typed errors (not crashes)

    @walletconnect/sign-client@2.19.2 has 120K+ weekly npm downloads, used in production by
    Uniswap, OpenSea, and dozens of major dApps. Tested across 200+ wallets.
    Rollback: set NEXT_PUBLIC_FEATURE_WALLETCONNECT=false → WC2 adapter never loads.

    Before: ~6 KB (Phase 1 wallet layer). After: ~119 KB total (~113 KB increase).

2. ARCHITECTURE DECISIONS

2.1 Interface Design — The WalletConnect Adapter

The WC2 adapter must implement the exact same WalletAdapter interface from Phase 1. This is the contract that all Phase 2 consumers (auth pages, contribute modals, settings) already depend on. The adapter translates WC2 protocol messages into this interface.

Design decisions specific to the WC2 adapter:

Security properties:

Failure modes:
  - Relay unreachable: circuit breaker returns error before pairing starts
  - Wallet doesn't support Stellar namespace: WC2 approval step will reject
  - User closes QR modal before pairing: abort error propagated
  - Wallet returns invalid public key format: validation step catches, returns internal error
  - Pairing QR scanned by attacker: attacker can't approve without wallet confirmation

Tested inputs:
  - Valid: standard pairing flow → { uri, session }
  - Invalid: no Stellar namespace → rejection with "unsupported namespace"
  - Boundary: 120s timeout → timeout error
  - Boundary: QR scanned but user rejects → user_rejected error
  - Boundary: Wallet disconnects mid-pairing → aborted session, reconnect flow

Time complexity: O(1) for pairing initiation + O(user_interaction_time) for approval
Memory complexity: O(1) — single SignClient instance, single session object

Cryptographic citations:
  - WC2 Pairing: Noise_NK_XX handshake over WebSocket (per WalletConnect 2.0 protocol spec v2.0)

2.2.2 WC2 Deep Link Algorithm (Mobile Flow)

2.2.3 WC2 Session Restore Algorithm

Algorithm: WalletConnectAdapter.restoreSession()

2.2.4 WC2 Sign Flow Algorithm

Algorithm: WalletConnectAdapter.signTransaction(xdr, opts?)

Failure modes:
  - User rejects in wallet: user_rejected error with retry option
  - Wallet app crashes mid-sign: timeout detect → retry or fallback
  - Relay drops during sign: circuit breaker kicks in, user sees relay down message
  - Wallet returns unsigned XDR: validation catches, returns internal error
  - Network mismatch: wrong chain ID → rejected by wallet with descriptive error

Time complexity: O(1) + O(user_confirmation_time)
Memory complexity: O(1)

Cryptographic citations:
  - Stellar transaction signing: Ed25519 (RFC 8032) — performed by wallet, not our code
  - XDR encoding: Stellar XDR specification (SEP-0005)

2.2.5 WC2 Relay Health Monitor (Circuit Breaker)

Algorithm: WCRelayMonitor.check()

Input: (none — self-monitoring)
Output: RelayStatus — "healthy" | "degraded" | "down"

Pseudocode:
1. Maintain sliding window of last 10 relay interactions:
   a. Each entry: { timestamp, success: boolean, latencyMs: number }
2. On each WC2 operation:

Failure modes:
  - False positive (relay healthy, marked down): conservative timeout settings, auto-recovery after 3 successes
  - False negative (relay down, marked healthy): sliding window detects within 10 interactions
  - Window corrupted by intermittent network: 10-sample window averages out transient failures

Time complexity: O(1) per operation (fixed-size window append)
Memory complexity: O(1) — 10 entries × ~50 bytes = 500 bytes

3. SECURITY ANALYSIS

3.1 Attack Surface Introduced

Code splitting WC2 adapter from extension adapters WC2 adapter must be available at the same time as extension adapters (wallet selector renders both). Code splitting would add a loading spinner when toggling between adapter types. Bundle size increase of ~121KB is within budget.
Lazy loading individual WC2 packages @walletconnect/sign-client requires @walletconnect/core as peer dep. Both must load together. @walletconnect/modal can be lazy-loaded (only needed when user opens pairing flow). Decision: load sign-client + core at app start, lazy-load modal on first WC2 connect click. Saves ~35KB from initial bundle.
Pre-connecting to WC2 relay on page load Relay connection is established only when user clicks "Connect with WalletConnect". Pre-connecting would add 500ms to page load and maintain a WebSocket all users don't need.
Polling for session approval vs WebSocket events WC2 uses WebSocket events for session updates. No polling needed. We rely on WC2's event system, which is push-based and real-time.
