1. WHAT IS BEING BUILT

1.1 Conceptual Overview

Phase 5 delivers the Full UI Migration + Multi-Account Support — the culmination of Phases 1–4. Every single page, component, and user interaction in the Moistello frontend that previously relied on hardcoded Freighter-only wallet logic is migrated to the Wallet Abstraction Layer. Simultaneously, this phase introduces first-class multi-account support, enabling a single user session to contain multiple connected wallets (Freighter + Lobstr + Ledger, for example), with instant switching between them.

Why this phase exists: Phases 1–4 built adapters in isolation. Each adapter passed its own tests. But the actual Moistello UI — the dashboard, the circle creation flow, the contribution flow, the settings page — still uses the old anti-patterns:

This code doesn't know about WalletConnect, doesn't know about passkeys, doesn't know about Ledger. It doesn't support multiple simultaneous wallets. It breaks SSR safety (direct window access). Phase 5 eliminates every instance of this pattern and replaces it with:

What changes for users:

  • Before Phase 5: One wallet connected at a time. If a user had Freighter AND Lobstr, they had to disconnect one to use the other. No mobile wallet users could see dashboard content designed for Freighter.
  • After Phase 5: Users can connect any combination of wallets. An account switcher dropdown in the navbar shows all connected wallets with their balances. Switching takes <100ms — no page reload. Each wallet has its own circles, contributions, and MoiScore, cleanly isolated from other wallets. A user can contribute to Circle A with their Freighter wallet, then switch to Lobstr and contribute to Circle B — all in the same session.

1.4 New Dependencies

Phase 5 is a UI migration phase. It introduces zero new npm dependencies. All components are built with existing framework dependencies:

Bundle size impact: ~0 KB new dependencies. Only our own code adds weight — estimated ~12 KB gzipped for 5 new components + store/hook enhancements.

1.X — DEPENDENCY COMPATIBILITY CHECK (Mandatory Pre-Implementation)

Before npm install or cargo add:

    No new wallet packages in Phase 5. Phase 5 uses adapters from Phases 1-4 which have
    already been verified for API compatibility.

    N/A — no new packages. Existing dependency versions have been in production (Phase 1-4
    code) and are tested.

    Before Phase 5: ~127 KB gzipped (wallet layer from Phases 1-4).
    After Phase 5: ~139 KB gzipped (+12 KB from new components, zero new dependencies).

2. ARCHITECTURE DECISIONS

2.1 Interface Design — Multi-Account Components

Property design rationale:

maxVisible Optional (default 3) Prevents navbar overflow when user connects 10+ wallets. Remaining wallets accessible via "More..." expand.

No balance field — fetch on demand Balance display in the switcher is a critical UX element (users choose which wallet to use based on balance). Pre-fetching in the entry avoids flash-of-loading on dropdown open.

Design decisions:

Rejected approach: single aggregated balance:

Phase 5 deliberately shows per-wallet balances rather than aggregating them. Rationale: users with multiple wallets think in terms of "this wallet has X, that wallet has Y." Aggregating implies fungibility between wallets, which is misleading — contributing from Freighter doesn't draw from the Lobstr balance. Each wallet's balance is independent and must be displayed as such.

2.2.1 Account Switcher Algorithm

Security properties:
   - Wallet switch does NOT trigger adapter reconnection — adapters stay connected
   - Switch is a pure state mutation (O(1) in the store), no network calls
   - Public keys are already known; no sensitive data exposed on switch
   - No signing or auth re-verification on switch (Phase 6 adds re-auth threshold)

Failure modes:
   - Wallet disconnected during switch: adapter events watch for disconnection,
     dropdown updates reactively (removed wallet disappears from list)
   - Race condition (double-click switch): debounced; second click while switch
     in progress is no-op
   - Adapter error during balance fetch for display: balance shows "—" with
     error tooltip; switcher still works, balance is non-blocking

Tested inputs:
   - Valid: 2 wallets connected → dropdown renders, switch works
   - Valid: 5 wallets connected → dropdown shows 3 + "More..."
   - Valid: 1 wallet connected → single indicator, no dropdown
   - Boundary: 0 wallets → "No wallet" empty state
   - Boundary: wallet with failed balance fetch → shows "—" for balance
   - Invalid: all wallets disconnected during dropdown open → dropdown closes

Time complexity: O(n) for entry rendering where n = number of wallets
Memory complexity: O(n) for display entries

2.2.2 Signature Router Algorithm

Algorithm: SignatureRouter.route(xdr, opts?)

Security properties:
   - Signature is ALWAYS generated by the adapter, never by our code
   - XDR decoding for display is read-only (no transaction modification)
   - SignPrompt modal sandboxes the signing UX — user must explicitly approve
   - Adapter-specific security contexts preserved (WC2 relay encryption, hardware
     wallet on-device signing, passkey biometric verification)
   - Signed XDR validated before being returned (ensures signature was added)
   - No private key material ever enters Moistello code

Failure modes:

3. SECURITY ANALYSIS

3.1 Attack Surface Introduced

3.2 Authentication & Authorization

Wallet switching does NOT trigger re-authentication in Phase 5. This is a deliberate design choice:

Active wallet determines signing authority When user clicks "Send Contribution," the active wallet's adapter signs. This is implicit authorization — being the active wallet means you are the signer. SignPrompt always shows: "Sign with {walletName} ({truncatedAddress})" before the approve button. User must confirm which wallet is signing.
JWT is per-wallet, not per-session Each connected wallet gets its own JWT from the backend. Switching wallets also switches the active JWT used for API requests. JWTs are short-lived (15 min). Backend validates that the JWT's public key matches the wallet performing the action. Cross-wallet JWT usage is rejected by backend.

Prefetching all wallet balances on page load User may have 10 wallets but only uses 1-2 in a session. Prefetching all adds 10× unnecessary Horizon API calls. Instead, only the active wallet's balance is fetched on load. Other balances fetched on-demand when the user opens the switcher dropdown.
Web Worker for balance aggregation Horizon API requests are simple GET calls with small JSON responses. The CPU overhead of parsing 5 balance responses (<3ms) does not justify Worker overhead (~50ms spawn + ~10KB serialization).
Aggressive memoization of wallet entries useMemo/React.memo on every wallet row adds complexity for marginal gain. With max 10 wallets, re-rendering the entire list costs <2ms. Memoization would optimize 2ms → 0.5ms — not worth the code complexity.

Optimizations applied that may seem excessive:

Optimization Justification
Promise.allSettled for balance fetches (not Promise.all) If one wallet's Horizon endpoint is slow (e.g., testnet Horizon throttling), Promise.all would block ALL balances. Promise.allSettled ensures 4 of 5 wallets still show balances while the 5th retries. This is critical UX — users shouldn't see a full balance page failure because one wallet is on a slow network.
BroadcastChannel for cross-tab sync even though Zustand supports middleware Zustand's persist middleware only syncs to localStorage, which fires storage events cross-tab. But localStorage events have 50-100ms latency in Chrome. BroadcastChannel achieves <5ms latency for the same message. For wallet switching (where Tab A switches, Tab B must update immediately), BroadcastChannel's low latency is worth the extra 20 lines of code.
Wallet connection order maintained as a separate array Map in JavaScript preserves insertion order, but we need MOST-RECENTLY-USED order, not insertion order. Maintaining walletConnectionOrder: string[] separately is slightly redundant but makes the sort O(1) (just read the array) vs O(n log n) (sort Map entries by lastActive on every render).
XLM price cached separately from balances Balance fetches happen every 30-60s per wallet. XLM price from a price oracle changes far less frequently. Caching the price for 60s avoids calling the price API for every balance refresh of every wallet.

Where future optimization yields highest ROI:

  • TanStack Query cache persistence across wallet switches: Currently each wallet gets its own query cache key. If user flips between two wallets frequently, the second wallet's data is always a cache hit after first fetch. This is already optimal for the common 2-3 wallet case.
  • Preconnect to Horizon endpoints on wallet connect: Saves ~50ms on first balance fetch (DNS + TCP + TLS). Low priority — balance is fetched in background anyway.
  • Service Worker for balance caching: Could cache balance responses and serve stale-while-revalidate. Phase 6 infra improvement, not Phase 5.
