Fixing (or disabling) colors in JUnit

I'm experimenting with Java and JUnit 6:

./mill --ticker false --color false test

produces an output with some colors (which I don't mind) but also some garbled [33m strings:

How do I either fix that or turn off all colors from JUnit?

Have you tried to set the NO_COLOR env variable?

Setting NO_COLOR has no impact. More generally, I wonder what test runs exactly and what options can be passed to it.

testForked which is the default task of a TestModule, forwards all given args to the used test framework, so it depends what test framework you use. The --color option is to control the output of Mill, but it looks like the test framework is itself rendering the colors, so can't tell what to do to disable them from a Mill perspective.

Looks like there is some support when using junit cli apps, https://docs.junit.org/5.10.5/user-guide/#running-tests-console-launcher-color-customization

You could look if they also support some env variable or Java system property, which you could set with forkEnv or forkArgs.

This project uses JUnit 6. So, I'm assuming what runs is https://github.com/sbt/sbt-jupiter-interface:

However, none of the options they describe seems to have any effect.
