This works:

run \@cmd, \$in,\$out,\$err,init=>\&sub,timeout(10);

This doesn't:

run \@cmd, \$in,\$out,\$err,timeout(10),init=>\⊂

It dies with No command before 'init'. I'm not sure why a timer resets $cur_kid, but it would be nice if the documentation noted this ordering issue.
