Question: what parts of Hyperkitty can be modified without affecting the DB or requiring a fork of Hyperkitty?
Answer: To some extent, django front-end templates can be customized. There are open PRs now which leverage that idea.
Corollaries: A front-end template could likely include javascript.
It would be possible for Javascript to query an api on www.boost.org and retrieve information about messages that happen to be stored in the www.boost.org DB.
And then it could manipulate html elements on the page, in whatever way, to display that information on the front-end.
That technique would avoid modifying Hyperkitty's DB migrations, or any core files of Hyperkitty. And avoid a fork.
