Render separately numbered supplementary information

First, thanks for working on this nice project!

Is it possible to render a separate file with supplementary (online) information?

I am currently using the appendix functionality for this, but this is unsatisfactory, because

• even if I split the resulting pdf, the SI page numbering does not begin with
• references to figures in the appendix have the prefix "A", but I would like to have the prefix "S"

I don't mind splitting a pdf manually, so it would be already great if one could start the page numbers of the appendix at 1 and select the prefix for table and figure numbers in the appendix.

Hi Guido, thanks for reaching out about this. I'm not sure I understand the problem, yet. I have previously created separate documents as online supplements by using papaja documents with classoption: doc. Would this work for your purposes? Could you try to describe what you are trying to do in a little more detail?

First, I followed instructions for appendices here: https://crsh.github.io/papaja_man/writing.html#appendices

If I set the document type to doc, I still get only one document.
Maybe I should change the top of the appendix.rmd to be able to get two documents?
So far it has only these lines:

My main problem however is not that I need to split the documents.

My main wishes are:

1. That Page numbering re-starts a 1 at the first page of the document (I could probably add this manually to the latex file )

2. That the prefix for figures numbers in the supplementary material is not A, but S. To be more clear, if there is only one appendix, figures 1-3 in the appendix will have the (automatically generated) numbers A1-A3, same for tables. I would like the to be able to determine that the numbers are S1-S3. or SI1-SI3.

Thanks for the additional information. I guess my question is, why are you using the appendix approach rather than creating a second independent (papaja) R Markdown file to write up the supplementary information?

Of I use the appendix, I can refer to figures created in the appendix with \ref@ in the manuscript and automatically get the right figures numbering. I assume, this does not work if I create the supplementaey info file independent of the main manuscript. Or is this not so?

I see, that makes sense. I don't think the bookdown syntax for cross-referencing would work with an independent document. I'll look into this next chance I get, but I don't think I'll get around to it before next week.

Just to come back to this:
Having a separate document would be neat, but this is not the main thing (splitting a document manually isn't a hassle).

I would be most useful is if one could set the prefix for figure and table numbers in the appendix.

To be more specific:
At the moment, the automatic figure numbering uses the prefix "A" for figure and table numbers in the appendix.* It would be a great improvement if there were the option to use a different letter then "A", for example "SI".

*more specifically the prefix is A for the first appendix. If one uses level 1 headers in the appendix, the prefix will be A for the figures and tables under the first level 1 header in the appendix, B for the figures under the second level 1 header, ...

Gotcha. Try adding the following at the start of the appendix file:

\renewcommand{\appendixname}{Supplementary Material}
\renewcommand{\thefigure}{SI\arabic{figure}} \setcounter{figure}{0}
\renewcommand{\thetable}{SI\arabic{table}} \setcounter{table}{0}
\renewcommand{\theequation}{SI\arabic{table}} \setcounter{equation}{0}

To also reset page numbering add \setcounter{page}{1}. If you want to add a prefix to the page number as well, you could check out the \fancypagestyle in fancyhdr, which the apa6 LaTeX depends on.

Also, if you have multiple supplementary material documents and or additional appendices you can also reset the numbering of appendices. For example, if you want appendices first, numbered from A-Z and restart numbering with the first supplementary material, numbered from SI1-SIX. In the first supplement add

\renewcommand{\theappendix}{SI\arabic{appendix}} \setcounter{appendix}{0}

and for the following use

\renewcommand{\theappendix}{SI\arabic{appendix}}

Thanks a lot, this worked well.

Just 2 things:

(1) It seems that \appendixname is not really a variable in latesx, because the name of the appendix doesn't change when I re-set this.

(2) I tried to reset the page header in the SI by adding the following commands:

\renewcommand{\shorttitle}{SI for Functioning of preschoolers with ADHD}
\renewcommand{\maketitle}{}

at the begining of the appendix/file, but this didn't do the job. Is there a way to reset the page header for the "appendix"?

(1) Not sure, why this is not working for you. If I add use appendix: appendix.Rmd in the YAML front matter and add \renewcommand{\appendixname}{Supplementary Material} at the top of appendix.Rmd I get the expected result. Without a reproducible example, I can't really say why you are getting a different result.

(2) As I pointed out in my previous answer, I think you will need to define a new fancy page style with for the fancyhdr package. For example, see this SO question. I don't have the time to work out an example, but I'd be interested to see the solution you come up with.
