Misalignment in clouds after rayimport with --remove_start_pos and raytranslate to translate points back

Hi Thomas and all,

I am testing raycloudtools on TLS data in a global CRS with large coordinates. I recently observed, that my pointclouds were misaligned after rayimport ... --remove_start_pos and raytranslate to add back the values of the start position.

The output of rayimport states:

start position:      414538 5.31731e+06      320.89 removed from all points

Based on the output, I ran:

raytranslate ...  414538,5.31731e+06,320.89

This is what the result looked like: Original point cloud (right), point cloud after processing with raycloudtools (left).

PDAL reports the exact start position coordinates as:

"X": 414537.93,
"Y": 5317306.88,
"Z": 320.89

As a test, I ran raytranslate with these coordinates and the point clouds were aligned well.

It looks like the misalignent appears due to rounding of the large x and y coodinates in the output of rayimport.
Is there a way to fix this precision loss?

Hi Hannah, I have pushed a fix. It was just the print statement lacking precision. I've given it 5 decimal places now.

You can also set the build config DOUBLE_RAYS to ON, if removing the start pos is problematic for your pipeline. Most functions work for clouds far from the origin.
