Broken lock, silently failing backups

A couple of times I've had the lock get stuck and (silently, if I don't check the logs) break my backups with the message an instance is already running. exiting. I wrote a quick script to perform the backup and notify me with notify-send from libnotify-bin if that happens:

DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS="unix:path=/run/user/$userid/bus"
export DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS

date

/usr/local/bin/autorestic --ci cron
code=$?

echo "Exit code: $code"

if [ "$code" -ne 0 ]; then
    notify-send -u critical "Autorestic failed to backup!"
# Optionally comment these two lines:
# -----------------------------------
# else
#     notify-send -u low "Autorestic backed up successfully!"
# -----------------------------------
fi

I'd love any alternative suggestions or improvements!
