TLS/SSL error: SSL is required, but the server does not support it

It seems that any and all setups possible with mariadb - including the docer compose variant provided here with the linuxserver.io databse server, one gets the following error:

ERROR 2026 (HY000): TLS/SSL error: SSL is required, but the server does not support it

Can this safely be ignored? On the same machine, the security implications seem to be irrelevant to me. However, it would be good to know that this does not affect functionality - if SSL is really "required".
