After spack installation, command pkg-config failed.

% pkg-config --libs darshan-runtime

Can the dependency of mpich be removed?

Can zlib be removed as well?
In Darshan's spack setting, zlib is a dependency.
But when not built in spack environment, zlib may not be enabled.

I agree that those can be removed. Neither one is technically correct (Darshan could be built against any MPI implementation, not just MPICH, and as you say zlib isn't actually a hard dependency). I think we can just rely on the rpath/runpath in the Darshan libary to pull in the correct libraries when it is dynamically linked since they are just library dependencies from Darshan's perspective. The Requires: clause isn't accomplishing anything here.
