Hosting on Github Pages

Hi there, I'd like to use Decap CMS with my site hosted on Github Pages.
I've read #6737 which suggests it's possible. I also read https://decapcms.org/docs/github-backend/ which suggests I still need to use Netlify for authentication.

As I've never used Netlify before, I'm not sure how this is done exactly?

• do I still need to create a working site on Netlify, even thought I don't intend to use it?
• for the backend configuration, what should I use in site_domain? should I use my actual custom domain, or should I instead use the site_id from Netlify?
