Trademark Policy

Last updated: 2026-05-14

The source code in this repository is licensed under the Apache License, Version 2.0. The Apache License grants broad rights to use, modify, and redistribute the code, but it explicitly does not grant any license to use the trademarks, service marks, trade names, logos, or product names of the Decentraland Foundation or the Decentraland DAO (collectively, the "Decentraland Marks"). See Apache 2.0 §6 ("Trademarks").

This document clarifies how the Decentraland Marks may and may not be used. Nothing in this policy is intended to expand or restrict any right that applicable trademark, fair-use, or consumer-protection law already grants.

What you may do

  • Fork and modify the code. Fork this repository and build derivative works under the Apache 2.0 license.
  • Refer to Decentraland in factual, descriptive contexts. Examples: "This project is compatible with Decentraland", "Imported from the Decentraland sites repository", "Tested against the Decentraland protocol". Nominative and comparative references that are truthful and non-misleading are permitted without prior permission, provided they do not imply sponsorship, endorsement, or affiliation.
  • Use unmodified screenshots of the official Decentraland sites for journalism, reviews, research, or educational purposes, with attribution to "Decentraland".
  • State interoperability and compatibility claims about your own product ("Works with Decentraland wearables", "Imports Decentraland scenes") provided the claims are accurate.

What you may not do without prior written permission

  • Use the Decentraland Marks as your branding. This includes the names Decentraland, DCL, the Decentraland logo, or any confusingly similar name or mark as the name or branding of your own product, service, website, application, social media account, or organization.
  • Register look-alike identifiers. Domain names, social media handles, package names, or app store listings that incorporate the Decentraland Marks or look-alike variants — for example, substituted characters (d3centraland), added prefixes/suffixes (decentraland-pro), or homoglyphs (decentraIand with a capital I).
  • Impersonate an official client. Operate a fork of this codebase, or any derivative deployment, in a way that could lead a reasonable user to believe it is the official Decentraland website, an official Decentraland product, or an official Decentraland service. This is about user-facing presentation (branding, copy, domains, UI) — not about which APIs or infrastructure your fork talks to.
  • Disparage or defame the Decentraland Foundation, the Decentraland DAO, or their communities while using the Decentraland Marks.

Forks and clones

You are welcome to fork this repository. If you publish a fork or a derivative deployment, you must:

  1. Rename the project. The Decentraland Marks must not appear in the project name, repository name, npm/package name, or any deployed domain under your control.
  2. Replace brand assets. Replace the Decentraland logo and brand assets in public/ and src/ with your own. Remove or replace any references to the Decentraland Marks in metadata such as <title>, og:site_name, manifest.json, and favicon set.
  3. Add a prominent disclaimer. State clearly in your README and on any deployed site that the project is an independent fork and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the Decentraland Foundation or the Decentraland DAO.

Forks and derivative projects may use publicly available Decentraland infrastructure — including public APIs, Catalyst nodes, wallet flows, and other publicly documented services — in accordance with their applicable terms and technical limits. This policy does not restrict that use; it only restricts presenting your project in a way that could mislead users about affiliation, endorsement, or sponsorship.

Reporting misuse

If you become aware of a website, application, or account that misuses the Decentraland Marks or impersonates an official Decentraland product, please report it to legal@decentraland.org. Suspected phishing or fraud impacting users should also be reported to security@decentraland.org so we can act on the technical side in parallel.

Requests for permission

For any use of the Decentraland Marks not explicitly permitted above, please request written permission from legal@decentraland.org before using the marks. Please include the intended use, the audience, and the duration.

This policy may be updated from time to time. Continued use of the Decentraland Marks after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
