Using Fresh without any npm dependencies / node_modules?

The 1.7.x release for Fresh used to work without any kind of npm dependencies, but it seems to be no longer the case. Is it no longer feasible to use Fresh with just jsr, esm.sh?

Sure, if you don't like vite you can always use the Builder class instead, see https://fresh.deno.dev/docs/advanced/builder . That's pretty similar to how Fresh 1.x worked behind the scenes.

But given its legacy, I don't want to rely on this for future projects. It seems Deno's going toward the direction of relying on npm / node ecosystem.

So, for now I'll drop fresh and focus on exploring Deno from a perspective of what's possible within the Deno (and I guess JSR ecosystem).
