How to handle 6 observations of LyA quasars in the new (DR11 imaging) 1B footprint #875

Description

@geordie666

When we initiated the 1B phase, we bumped the number of expected observations of existing QSO targets by 2 observations from 4 to 6 possible observations. This was necessary because such targets were already "in play" in the existing (DR9 imaging) area.

How should we handle this for the new (DR11 imaging) area where the QSO targets are starting from scratch. Possibilities include:

  • Change the number of expected observations of QSO targets to 6 from the outset. This could break code in the original DESI survey area.
  • Perform a one-time bump of 2 observations after creating the initial targets. This at the least would certainly require special handling again in the alt-MTLs.
  • Create a new QSO target class. This would likely require a whole host of downstream code changes.
