Sample — AI agent operating a business system

Claim proved: an agent gets a typed, policy-guarded action surface with no parallel permission system — it can only do what its identity is authorised to do — and confirmation is enforced by this process rather than by the model's cooperation.

POST /mcp speaks MCP JSON-RPC: initialize, tools/list, tools/call, resources/list, resources/read, and it answers a tools/call with an event stream when the client accepts one. POST /api/v1/refunds is the same flow over HTTP, which is how the two refusals below are compared rather than described. Everything runs against an in-memory ticket desk and needs no infrastructure.

Three flows, chosen so each half of the claim can be seen failing as well as working:

Exposing a flow to agents

That attribute is the entire integration. The descriptor below — its name, its side-effect annotations, its permission requirement and its confirmation requirement — is projected out of flowx.manifest.json at run time. Nothing in the flow file states any of them, and nothing in Program.cs mentions the tool.

Two fields differ from what this file first drew, and both are corrections.

  • inputSchema is an open object naming the contract, not a $ref. The manifest's top-level schemas map is one of the fields the committed schema declares and nothing writes (ADR-0017), so there is nothing to point at. Generating one by reflecting over the contract would publish a second source of truth to agents — unversioned, and outside flowx diff.
  • requiredPermissions is a list, because a flow is a sequence of capabilities and each declares its own stance. Publishing the first would tell an agent it could call a tool the step loop refuses halfway through.

Reading the graph

An agent can read the manifest itself, not only the slice a tool list projects:

resources/read returns the bytes the build published, verbatim — a slice of the document rather than a summary of it. That is what makes it worth having: a model deciding whether to call something sees the steps, the deadline, the error catalogue and the capability stances that a tool descriptor does not carry. TheManifestIsReadableAsAResourceAndIsTheBuildsOwnBytes compares the response with the compiled-in constant.

The confirmation comes first and grants nothing. The server cannot know whether a caller holds payment.refund without entering the flow, so a human can be asked about a call that is then refused at the step — and the prompt says so in as many words. The two refusals carry different codes because they are different facts with different remedies.

The prompt does not name an amount, and the first draft of this page did: "This will charge €19.98 and reserve 2× SKU-1." The manifest carries the side effect payment-gateway and carries no price, and computing one means running the pricing capability — which is running the flow the prompt exists to gate. It names the declared effects, the required permissions, the agent's own arguments, and which of those were withheld because the contract marks them [Sensitive].

Server-enforced confirmation is per deployment, not per flow. One line, and the only non-default one in this sample's Program.cs:

The default publishes the annotation and leaves the asking to the client, which is what every existing MCP client expects and what a client that cannot read an event stream requires. ADR-0060 is the decision, including what it costs.

Why prompt injection does not escalate

The security property is inherited, not added: an agent is just another trigger (09 §10, 15 §7). tools/call builds its FlowInvocation with the same HttpTriggerReader an [HttpTrigger] route uses, so there is no second reader for a separate agent path to live in.

Agent-assisted engineering (the other direction)

ops.review is a flow like any other, so it is a tool like any other — authorised by ops.read, traced, and published in the manifest. FlowX.Ai reads flowx.manifest.json and returns findings:

Five rules, and four of them are cross-flow — an orphaned event, a Public capability with declared side effects, a partially compensated saga, an agent tool that asks nobody, an agent tool taking a secret. That is deliberate: what a manifest is for is the questions a single compilation cannot answer.

One finding this page originally showed cannot be produced, and it was the headline one:

order.place step 2 (payment.capture) has a retry policy and a 2s timeout, but the flow deadline is 30s. Worst case: 2s + 0.2s + 2s + 0.6s + 2s = 6.8s.

ManifestWriter.WritePolicies emits a policy's kind and its stage and none of its parameters — there is no attempts, no PT2S and no backoff anywhere in the document. Recovering them means reading the source, which is the one input 13 §5 forbids this layer. It is also already answered where the numbers are: FLOWX1019 computes that budget at compile time, on every build.

And there is no IAiProvider. With narrate: true the review asks the calling agent's own model over MCP's sampling/createMessage, so this deployment holds no API key and makes no egress to a model vendor. What is sent is ManifestReview.ToPrompt() — a pure function of the build's manifest — so 13 §5's "AI runs on the manifest, not on data" is a method signature rather than a rule. WhatTheModelIsAskedIsAPureFunctionOfTheManifest asserts it byte for byte. A caller with no model gets the deterministic rendering and is told so.

Things to try

  1. Decline the confirmation. The refusal is mcp.confirmation_refused with detail.outcome, and no money moves — ADeclinedConfirmationMeansTheFlowIsNeverEntered.
  2. Call ticket_refund with Tokens.Agent and approve your own prompt. Still authorization.permission_denied, still zero refunds.
  3. Call it over POST /api/v1/refunds with the same token. 403, RFC 7807, and the same code string — one decision, two shapes.
  4. Call it without Accept: text/event-stream. Refused, because a client that cannot be asked does not get to skip the question.
  5. Read flowx://flow/ticket.refund. The bytes are the build's.
  6. Write Confirmation = ConfirmationMode.Never on ticket.refund. The build stops: FLOWX1046.

What is still not here

  • flowx generate mcp and flowx ai review are not CLI verbs. The surface is served live and the review is a flow; the CLI still has four verbs (22-CLI).
  • Elicit is single-node. The table joining a server request to the POST that answers it is process-local, so a deployment behind a load balancer needs session affinity. ADR-0060 §6 is where that gets reopened.
  • The flows are Ephemeral. Each has one effectful step and nothing after it, so there is nothing to unwind — but an agent action is journalled and replayable only for a Durable flow, which is the same trade an Ephemeral HTTP endpoint makes.
