Request: Run `ruff` linter/autoformatter on the source code

It seems that there are many violations of things like doc hints, to the point that VS Code can't really render the docstrings in the hover preview.

Running `ruff` as part of the CI pipeline would help fix this! 

Would you accept a PR that implements this?
