Photo option for timeline

We need a recipe for adding a timeline item with a photo (Hugo page bundle or page w/ photo from another page bundle).

• Item should be marked in a separate timeline category so it can be listed as a rotating gallery elsewhere
• Photo thumbnails should be automatically generated (Hugo can do that)
• Photo can display in timeline with some specific color/layout matching that it's a snapshot of "event name" + photo credits possible.

The timeline is able to display photos now, but we still need a separate category, so we can generate nice galleries with captions.

We probably need to talk about this one, since it's a bit coupled with the process of getting the photos (how we manage contribution in an easy way) and then ultimately displaying one or more photo galleries in a nice way, maybe with some coupling to the timeline.

My instinct says to not "over-do it" :) But I also know that MANY photos exist from 20 years of community events all over the world...

This feature sounds super interesting — I’d love to help out with adding the gallery category and improving how photos show up in the timeline.

Just to make sure I’m on the right track:

• We want timeline items with photos to be tagged separately (like gallery) so they can be reused in a rotating gallery.
• Hugo can handle thumbnail generation, right?
• These photo items should have a distinct look — maybe a different layout or color?
• And we’ll show photo credits too?

Before that, I had a few things I wanted to ask:

• Should each photo live inside its own page bundle, or can we reuse photos from other bundles?
• Do we plan to support multiple photos per timeline entry?
• Will the gallery be a separate page, or part of the timeline view?
• What’s the easiest way for contributors to add photos — GitHub PRs, or are we thinking of using a CMS?
• Any thoughts on layout or styling preferences for these photo items?

Here are some inputs for this, knowing that it's difficult to give you all inputs needed:

I think that the easiest way to make photos self-contained (photo+meta data) is indeed a bundle, so like content/timeline/photo-event-slug/_index.md for the data, and then the photos are bundled. We have to somehow supply the right options for each photo, but I think just the usual timeline stuff + credits is enough. We should consider that an event can have several photos, I think maybe we wanna add like a specific conference with 2-3-4 photos.

Best place to start is to support having a couple of timeline items with 2-3-4 photos. I think we should just try to align the thumbnails in a nice way. The function to click and enlarge is already implemented.

Eventually, when there are enough photos, we can add a rotating gallery on the front page. I think we should skip this for now.

See the timeline instructions: Those should be expand with very simple steps on how to upload a photo.

When there are several photos, we should make them smaller so that the timeline item itself doesn't grow too large. Kind of how Google Meet automatically displays meeting participants next to each other :)
