Enhanced Form Validation with isValid Flag Integration

Overview

Enhanced the BusinessInfoStep component to properly utilize the isValid flag for form validation, providing immediate user feedback and preventing navigation with invalid data.

Problem

The isValid flag was computed but underutilized. The component needed:

  • Better integration of isValid to control form submission
  • Immediate feedback for required fields when empty
  • Prevention of navigation when form is invalid
  • Clear visual indicators for validation state

Solution

Implemented a comprehensive validation system that:

  1. Uses isValid flag to disable the Next button
  2. Prevents navigation when isValid is false
  3. Shows inline errors for required fields based on interaction state
  4. Provides progressive feedback (on blur and on submit attempt)

Changes Made

1. Added New State Variables (Lines 19-21)

State Purposes:

  • validationErrors: Stores validation error messages for each field
  • touched: Tracks which fields the user has interacted with (blur event)
  • attemptedSubmit: Tracks if user has attempted to submit the form

2. Added Blur Handler (Lines 37-39)

Marks fields as "touched" when user clicks away from them, enabling progressive validation feedback.

3. Enhanced handleNext Function (Lines 63-83)

Key Improvements:

  • Sets attemptedSubmit flag to show all validation errors
  • Uses isValid flag to prevent navigation early
  • Shows specific errors for empty required fields
  • Returns early if !isValid (navigation prevention)
  • Only calls onNext() after full validation passes

4. Added shouldShowError Helper (Lines 87-90)

Determines when to show error messages based on:

  • Field has been touched (user interacted with it)
  • OR user attempted to submit the form
  • AND there's an actual validation error for that field

5. Enhanced Input Fields with Progressive Validation

Business Name Field (Lines 102-116):

Key Features:

  • onBlur handler added to track field interaction
  • shouldShowError() determines when to show errors
  • Fallback error messages for required fields
  • Red border appears only when error should be shown

6. Added Form-Level Error Alert (Lines 217-223)

  • User has attempted to submit (attemptedSubmit)
  • Form is invalid (!isValid)

7. Next Button with isValid Integration (Lines 225-232)

Button Behavior:

  • Disabled when !isValid (required fields empty)
  • Clicking triggers handleNext() which:
    • Checks isValid flag
    • Prevents navigation if invalid
    • Shows validation errors
    • Only advances if all validation passes

Validation Flow

Progressive Validation Stages

Stage 1: Field Blur (Touch)

User fills field → User clicks away → Field marked as touched
→ If field has error → Show error message immediately

Example:

  1. User enters "123" in phone field
  2. User clicks away (blur)
  3. Field marked as touched
  4. Validation runs
  5. Error shown: "Please enter a valid Kenyan phone number"

Stage 2: Submit Attempt

User clicks Next → attemptedSubmit = true → All errors shown
→ If !isValid → Show form-level alert + field errors
→ If isValid → Run full validation → Advance if passes

Example with Empty Required Fields:

  1. User clicks "Next" without filling required fields
  2. attemptedSubmit set to true
  3. isValid check fails (business_name or phone_primary empty)
  4. Error messages shown for empty required fields
  5. Form-level alert appears: "Please fill in all required fields"
  6. Navigation prevented (early return)

Example with Filled Required Fields:

  1. User fills business name and phone
  2. isValid = true (required fields present)
  3. User clicks "Next"
  4. Full validation runs (checks phone format, email format)
  5. If validation passes → onNext() called → Navigation proceeds
  6. If validation fails → Errors shown → Navigation prevented

isValid Flag Usage

Where isValid is Used

  1. Button Disabled State (Line 228)

    disabled={!isValid}
    • Button appears disabled (grayed out) when required fields empty
    • Visual indicator that form cannot be submitted
  2. Navigation Prevention (Line 66)

    if (!isValid) {
      // Show errors and return early

    }
    • Prevents onNext() from being called
    • Shows validation errors for required fields
    • User cannot proceed to next step
  3. Form-Level Alert Display (Line 217)

isValid Computation (Line 85)

Simple Check:

  • true if both business_name and phone_primary have values
  • false if either is empty/undefined/null

Why Simple?

  • Quick check for required fields presence
  • No complex validation (done separately in validateForm())
  • Enables/disables button immediately
  • Prevents navigation early if required fields missing

User Experience Improvements

Before Enhancement

  • ❌ No visual feedback until clicking Next
  • ❌ Could attempt navigation without required fields
  • ❌ No progressive validation
  • ❌ isValid flag calculated but unused

After Enhancement

  • Progressive Feedback: Errors show on blur (field interaction)
  • Navigation Prevention: Cannot advance when !isValid
  • Button State: Disabled when required fields empty
  • Clear Indicators: Red borders + error messages + form alert
  • Smart Error Display: Errors only shown after interaction or submit attempt
  • isValid Flag Fully Utilized: Controls button, navigation, and alerts

Validation Scenarios

Scenario 1: Empty Form Submission

State: business_name = '', phone_primary = ''
Action: User clicks "Next"
Result:
  1. isValid = false
  2. Button was already disabled
  3. handleNext() sets attemptedSubmit = true
  4. Early return due to !isValid
  5. Errors shown: "Business name is required", "Primary phone number is required"
  6. Form-level alert appears
  7. Navigation prevented

Scenario 2: Partial Form (Only Business Name)

State: business_name = 'Swift Movers', phone_primary = ''
Action: User clicks "Next"
Result:
  1. isValid = false
  2. Button disabled
  3. User cannot click (but if they could):
     - Error shown for phone_primary
     - Navigation prevented

Scenario 3: Required Fields Filled, Invalid Phone Format

State: business_name = 'Swift Movers', phone_primary = '123'
Action: User clicks "Next"
Result:
  1. isValid = true (both fields have values)
  2. Button enabled
  3. handleNext() runs
  4. Passes isValid check
  5. validateForm() runs
  6. Phone validation fails: "Please enter a valid Kenyan phone number"
  7. Error shown
  8. Navigation prevented

Scenario 4: All Valid Data

State: business_name = 'Swift Movers', phone_primary = '+254712345678'
Action: User clicks "Next"
Result:
  1. isValid = true
  2. Button enabled
  3. handleNext() runs
  4. Passes isValid check
  5. validateForm() returns true
  6. onNext() called
  7. Navigation to next step succeeds

Scenario 5: Field Blur with Error

State: phone_primary = '123'
Action: User clicks away from phone field (blur)
Result:
  1. handleBlur('phone_primary') called
  2. Field marked as touched
  3. On next render, shouldShowError('phone_primary') = true
  4. Error shown: "Please enter a valid Kenyan phone number"
  5. Red border appears
  6. User sees feedback immediately

Benefits

1. Immediate Feedback

  • ✅ Errors show on blur (after user interacts with field)
  • ✅ No waiting until submit to see validation issues
  • ✅ User can correct errors as they go

2. Navigation Control

  • isValid flag prevents navigation with empty required fields
  • ✅ Early return in handleNext() stops progression
  • ✅ Full validation runs before allowing navigation
  • ✅ Cannot proceed with invalid data

3. Clear Visual Indicators

Testing Recommendations

Manual Testing Checklist

  1. Empty Form Tests

    • Load page - no errors shown initially
    • Click Next - button should be disabled
    • Force click (dev tools) - should show errors and prevent navigation
  2. Progressive Validation Tests

    • Click in business name field, then click away without typing - no error shown (field empty but not invalid)
    • Type in business name, clear it, click away - error appears
    • Type in phone "123", click away - error appears immediately
    • Correct phone to valid format - error clears
  3. Submit Attempt Tests

    • Leave fields empty, click Next - all required field errors appear
    • Fill business name only - phone error appears on Next
    • Fill both required fields with invalid phone - format error appears
    • Fill all valid - navigation succeeds
  4. Error Clearing Tests

    • Show error for field, start typing - error disappears
    • Show error via submit, then correct field - error clears
  5. Button State Tests

    • Empty form - button disabled and grayed out
    • Fill business name only - button still disabled
    • Fill both required fields - button enables
    • Clear a required field - button disables again
