Three tracks per year tracing the Jersey Sound — Club Zanzibar, Newark NJ, resident DJ Tony Humphries — back through its soul/gospel/disco roots (proto years favour the Zanzibar/garage songbook; New Jersey-native artists tagged) and forward to today. The brief locked Kerri Chandler – Climax 1 (Atmosphere E.P. Vol. 1, Shelter, 1993) as its anchor, with Hardrive – Deep Inside as podium silver. Jersey Club (the 2000s Newark genre — same city, different music) is excluded. Every row was verified against the Discogs API; YouTube links come from each release page's own community-added videos. The center of this canon is not a record — it is Tony Humphries. The Zanzibar resident (1982–early '90s), the KISS-FM Mastermix, the mix credits threaded through the decades: his own Master Mix Medley (1982), the Joubert Singers (1985), Ma Foom Bey (1986), Intense (1990), Feel The Light (1996), Hostile Takeover on his own TR Records (2013), his Nina Simone dub (2019), and the 2026 Running Back Mastermix cut from his own DAT archive. The [TH] tag marks his hand; the two records most often argued as THE central track — Climax 1 (the brief's anchor) and Let The Rain Come Down (the scene's own Top 100 #1, mixed by Humphries) — hold their years as era-peaks in his orbit. The table above exists because the list was built twice, independently, and the two builds were then reconciled:
- Build one (completed 2026-07-13): many rounds of hand-guided web research, then a full Discogs API verification pass — 78 tracks, one per year with podium seconds and thirds only where the scene's own authorities showed genuine contention. Its strength was scene-specific sources: the Jersey Sound Top 100 (the scene's own 30-years-later reckoning, FIDA/ThinkSoul Committee, 2019), Bill Brewster's Mixmag 20, and above all Tony Humphries' own selections — his 2003 Choice compilation and the 2026 Running Back Mastermix cut from his KISS-FM DAT archive.
- Build two (2026-07-19 — the table above): built with the discogs-playlist skill under a 3-per-year mandate, deliberately without looking at build one's pick tables until all 199 slots were assembled and validated. Only then were the two lists compared.
What the reconciliation showed:
- Roughly 45 picks landed identically — several down to the same Discogs pressing chosen independently (Sly's Dance To The Music LP, Serious Intention's Easy Street 12", Phase II's Movin' original). Two independent methods, one canon: agreement like this is the strongest signal a pick belongs.
- Date corrections cross-validated. Both builds independently caught Adeva "Respect" = 1988 (the 1989 chart year is what every fan list propagates) and Kimara "When Can Our Love Begin" = 1998. Fan-list dates rot; pressings don't.
- 22 picks were adopted from build one on authority attestation — records the Top 100, Brewster, or Humphries' own compilations lock in that a broader songbook frame had missed: K-Yze's "Stomp" (video filmed at Zanzibar), Aly-Us "Follow Me", De'Lacy's Deep Dish 12", Kenny Bobien's "Why We Sing", the Timmy Regisford thread, Jovonn, "Stand On The Word" re-sung in 2020, and the Dee Dee Brave dub that bookends 2026.
- Build two added what build one lacked: the New Jersey-native proto layer (the Shirelles of Passaic, Dionne Warwick of East Orange, Newark's Linda Jones and Savoy gospel, Plainfield's Parliaments, Englewood's All Platinum), Humphries' own 1982 Master Mix Medley, Cultural Vibe's Ma Foom Bey, full three-per-year coverage with 2020s depth, and the whole YouTube/ratings maintenance layer.
- The central-track contention dissolved. Build one, following the scene's own authorities, crowned Intense "Let The Rain Come Down" (Top 100 #1, mixed by Humphries, on Abigail Adams' Movin' Records); the brief had locked Kerri Chandler's "Climax 1". The resolution: center the artist, not a record — build one's case for Intense was always really a case about Humphries' hand on it, and the brief's case for Climax 1 was about his club's lineage. Both records hold their years as era-peaks in his orbit.
A principle of this project: picks that were present from the beginning deserve explicit treatment, not silent disappearance. Every one of build one's 78 picks was swept against the final table. The result: 50 carried (a few re-anchored to truer pressings or corrected years — MFSB to its 1974 pressing, First Choice to the 1983 club 12"), 4 carried at the release level with a different cut chosen (listed below), 6 already sit on the verified bench above (D-Train, Jomanda "Got A Love For You", Kim English "Nite Life", Kimara "When Can Our Love Begin", "Son Of Raw", 25 Years Of Madhouse), 17 benched here with written reasons, and 1 year-anchor question flagged at the end.
