AutoCompleteBox FocusChanged doesn't trigger VisualState changes

I'm unable to use visual states relating to focus for AutoCompleteBox as they appear not to be connected. Shouldn't FocusChanged call Interaction.UpdateVisualStateBase(useTransitions) ?
