Feature for this project

Assuming that someday FreeDV could be built into tranceivers, I have been considering how this would work from a users perspective.

Most amateurs tune around in SSB mode listening to stations and presumably in the future when tuning across FreeDV signals will expect them to be decoded automatically.

We could do this now, by offering Analog, Digital and Auto modes in FreeDV.

Auto mode would:
Run FreeDV in RX continually monitoring for a valid decoded signal.

Without a decode the RX input to FreeDV would be passed straight through to the Speaker output unmodified.

If a decoded signal appeared then after a short delay the decoded output would be switched to the speaker output replacing direct off-air audio.

One of the most advantageous aspects of this feature would be to allow users to tune around without any GUI interaction and instantly listen to FreeDV.

This sounds like the squelch in the older modes, no?

Yes you are correct!
We just tested 700D on air with squelch off and it does give the effect I was thinking about.
I seem to remember that there was low level analogue in the background in 700D with the squelch off in the past but I didn't hear it tonight during RX of 700D. 700D did try to decode some band noise during the analogue but we would not get that with RADE.
Does the current analogue mode modify the audio in any way or is it a clean pass through?
Our thoughts tonight were to maybe replace the analogue/digital toggle with 3 mutually exclusive check boxes:- Analogue, Digital and Auto, if this were to be implemented. (PTT in Auto to transmit in Digital).
So yes, very similar the old squelch but with no control.
