Caching support for bucket stores

Are there suggested ways to provide a read-through cache for bucket stores to help with read latency to s3/gcs?

• I saw the plugin cache_httpfs seems not to work - any idea why?
• I see s2 open sourced cachey but I assume this would need a plugin creation or addition to httpfs?

Any other suggested options?
